Who has aftermarket warranties for their FDs?

When I bought my FD a few years ago from a dealer I spent $1400 on a "bumper-bumper" warranty.

Needless to say it paid off.

The warranty company paid for $12,000 of repairs.

Here are some companies for those of you that might be interested:

I've considered this. Which one do you have? What were your experiences?

I picked mine up with a little left from GE Financial but didn't need to use it.

$12k? That's a lot for repairs. What all did you have done?

Be careful what warranty company you purchase. Many have exclusions to easily deny work, nearly all require strict maintenance records, some have limits of liability to how much they will pay, many do not cover 93-95 RX-7s or Rotaries in particular, some do not cover "seals and gaskets" which would be what would go in a rotary. You get what you pay for.

I paid $1700 for my warranty (buyers choice) and they have covered $2700 worth of repair so far. This is with all of my mods too .

I have a western general warranty costing $1250./24 months. My car only had 40K miles when entered into warranty. I haven't yet used any warranty assistance but have it in place for the potential of large expenses. Something we call all look forward to.

This is where I got mine.

They use American Road.
Price was around $1300, but I've gotten back a little over $6500 so far in repairs.

That's who I had and they were really easy to get the work done since the agent had little knowledge on these cars.

With respect to FDs, getting a warranty is worth its weight in gold, esp. if you drive your car hard. Having said that, this has been discussed in a few threads before...

https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/quote-extended-warranty-71586/

https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/best-aftermarket-warranty-311266/

https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/low-original-miles-potential-car-heritage-warranty-322526/

But while I'm at it, it's gonna be damn near impossible to get a warranty on an FD now. Warranties have limits on mileage and age. Mileage is usually under 100K miles, and age is usually 9 years and less. You must meet BOTH requirements.

What Railgun69 is talking about is a pre-existing warranty. That's not a problem...the warranty doesn't automatically run out once you pass 10 yrs...that's not how it works. It's that you can't BEGIN a warranty if the car is 10 years old. But lets say your car is 9 yrs old and it qualifies, you could get a 2 year warranty, that would cover it through it's 11th year. But you just can't BEGIN that coverage on the car if it's past the 9 year mark. See the diff??

I'm real curious to see if you can renew a warranty after the 9 year mark since it's still under warranty. Although it prob won't stay "platinum" coverage, prob just powertrain, but that's still great. Guess there's one way to find out...

BTW, don't forget that cars w/ warranties (esp. something like an FD) must be BONE STOCK. I'm talking about stock intake, stock DP, stock cat, stock rims, stock tire sizes, obviously stock ECU, the whole shibang. And you bet that the first thing the inspector will look for when coming to check on warranty work would be if the car is in violation of warranty in any way. That way, they won't have to pay...

Also, keep in mind that not only do the majority of companies not cover twin turbo vehicles, many specifically do not cover RX7s, 3rd gen RX7s, rotary engines, rotor housings, etc. So you may very well pay for something that you can't use if you're not careful...

I bought my FD in October from a dealer who chucked in an aftermarket warranty with the deal.

Just squeezed in, the age limit of the car was 12 years (Build date of mine is 1992). And when we were reading the fine print, under exclusions, sure enough there it was "rotary engines". We thought the dealer was being dodgy on us, but it turns out he is authorised by the warranty company to sell the warranty on RX-7's (He imports a lot of series 8 from Japan). We rang around the warranty company to clear that one up.

So far I haven't made any claims, touch wood. I do have strict maintenan requirements, servicing at 10k km intervals, with oil change and safety check at 5k km intervals. Not too bad really, can only be good for the car.

The warranty I got is 3 year unlimited km warranty, but does have a claim limit of Aus$2k per claim (unlimited claims). So it's not going to cover a total engine rebuild, but it will definately help.

You need to read more carefully...

Not all warranty companies know what to look for.

If you make ur engine compartment look relatively stock to the untrained eyes, like BATMAN's FD then it shouldn't be a problem.

Of course u'll have to find a trustworthy shop that will represent ur interests.

Very true...but since most warranty companies use inspectors from the same pool (set up by area/region), you'll find that certain areas that are dense w/ RX7 shops have inspectors that are actually quite familiar w/ FDs... IMO, it's a small price to pay to take off all your mods and return your car to stock (prob only $200 worth of labor at any reputable RX7 shop) than risk getting caught and being left high and dry...
