whistling under boost

this just started last week and it's driving me nuts. when the turbo is under load i start to hear a whistle come out as boost increases, boost is still normal though and the stock bov still opens up when i let off. i checked all my hoses and everything hooked up. since i didn't have the gasket i just used some silicon to seal between the y-pipe and crossover tube and i don't think it's that. i want to get this resolved by the end of the weekend and i'm utterly clueless as to what this could be from.

Joe,

what do you mean that you used silicon sealant? Do you have a coupler there or not?

If you really just used silicone sealant, I don't know how you expect that to hold up to 10psi and NOT leak.

/\ I'm with him.

A whistle usally means a boost leak. You may or may not see that on your boost gauge depending on the size of the leak.

Check turbos for shaft play. The whistle is also a tell tale sign of turbos that are about to go out from excessive shaft play. I lost a set a long time ago and the whistle was the first sign. About a month later I lost a few blades.

If it were leaking he would see less boost. He already said he was getting full boost. Chances are it's not a leak. Besides boost leaks don't whistle. They blow.

I had a whistle once that started over 4.5k (secondary turbo), it turned out that two of the bolts were missing on the back side of the y-pipe.

a split or leak in a coupler can sound like the squealing of air out of a balloon (and you don't necessarily lose a lot of pressure)

i'll double check all the bolts tomorrow morning when i get the chance to put it on the ramps and look at it, i'll pull the crossover pipe on and scrape the silicon off and put some insta-gasket or reapply some silicon and see where that gets me. if it persists by sunday i guess i'll have to be looking for some new turbos again; although the ones i have now only have about 10-15k on them so i would hope they aren't going out yet.

You're going to again not use a gasket? Why..? And, why would you look for new turbos before checking for shaft play?

spend the money and buy a new gasket, they aren't that costly.....worth fixing a problem i'd say. Silicon will not hold under a lot of pressure, and liquid gaskets are messy and are not reliable to seal completly. Did you do any other mods recently along with the y-pipe? For example, when you put an open filter intake on, you can hear the turbos spool....which could explain your whistle...just a thought.

y pipe was added long after the intake, i'm just doing the silicone again until i get a gasket, which is about a week or so. the whistle doesn't coincide with the turbo spooling up it begins afterwards when the pressure builds which is what leads me to believe it's the crossover pipe seal. either way i'm going to temporarily reseal it with the silicon again recheck all the hoses and the bolts and i'll at least know for sure what it's not by morning if that doesn't do the trick. thanks again for all the help and advice

found the problem luckily for me it was neither the y pipe nor the turbos. found a small hole in one of the hoses i must've missed before, problem solved and i'm now less annoyed when driving. thanks guys
