while the UIM is off.....
hey im in the middle of the horrific vacuum line job. half of the engine is on my kitchen table so, i was just wondering what else i could do since im already this far. im doing the efini y pipe, and vacuum lines... but are there other reliability things i can do while im in here? also is it possible to adjust the TPS while its off of the car? the other thing i noticed was the rubber or plastic around most of the wires was completely rock hard and nost of it has broken off... what can i put around it to protect it? i dont think heat shrink will fit over the connectors. thakns

Check all of your coolant lines If you see any with any areas where you can not see the brading, replace them. Look for bulges as well.
No, you can't adjust the TPS while it is off the car.
Not sure about the wiring, but mine is exactly the same, and when my car was with Steve Kan, he didn't mention it (so I assume it is not too big a deal?).

Most of my coolant lines are original, and I don't worry too much. The ones to check in particular are the turbo coolant lines (both come off of the thermostat and into the turbo assembly), heater lines (into the firewall on the passenger side), and the throttle body coolant lines (easy to spot, and can be eliminated). Those take the most heat from what I have been told and seen. If you don't replace them now, you will be eventually

My FPR was leaking when I got the car, so check that as well. The FPD sits on top of the secondary injectors and the FPR sits in line with the fuel lines and primary fuel rail. The stock units are black, and the new OEM parts are green. They both look like flying saucers with a tube sticking out of one end, bent into an L.
Also note that the FPD is underneath the rat's nest. You're on your own for that one. The FPR should be visible with the UIM and ACV (air control valve) unit removed. The ACV is pretty easy to spot. Under the UIM on the passenger side of the engine it is bolted on by three bolts to the LIM (lower intake manifold) if I remember correctly. It also has the airpump pipes connected to it. Easiest way to tell if you have a leak in that area is to stick your nose in there and smell for gas.

If you have any other worries, chances are someone else on the forum with an FD lives near you. I swear more than half of the forum says "Bay Area" in their location.
