While I have the tranny out.

I'm going to pull my transmission out to replace the 5th gear synchro. While I have it out, what do you guys recommend to do to it while its out? The car is basically a weekend street car. Not meant for drag or street racing. Right now I'm making about 400-420hp at the crank. I'm wondering if the RX7 tranny needs any sort of reinforcement. Would changing the final gear ratio make any sense or just more noise? Is the replacement 5th gear synchros much more durable than the original ones?

Thanks in advance.

Dont forget to change your pilot bearing while the tranny is out... you can get the bearing from act and the bearing seal from malloy mazda... DONT FORGET THE SEAL :P

If you are going to have your flywheel off, torque the engine bolts.

Torqueing the engine bolts? Is that just to retighten it? I'll make a list of things to do.

Are there any performance mods that make sense to do for the transmission?

Yes. The people "in the know" (a few guys in the road race group) notice that the bolts need an additional 15-20 lbs of torque when they retorque them. Pushing a lot of hp on these engines is going to loosen things up over time.

Check your rear oil pan bolts. Make sure they are snug, but don't over-tighten them.

If you have a stock flywheel, this is the time to consider a light one.

replace your clutch fork - its the $20 part that no one replaces till it breaks and costs them a few hundred in towing and tranny removal.

maybe your throwout bearing if its noisy?

Thanks guys. I do have a lightened flywheel already. I guess the concensus is to leave the tranny stock and replace any worn parts. My car only has 20k miles on it.
