There is a reason nearly half of the FD's the US started with aren't on the streets anymore, and it is certainly not because they are in people's living rooms on display. With the amount of crashes a good portion of them fatal, engine fires, and other mishaps, the US has halved it's population of FD's.
The kid owners for the most part do nothing good for these cars. It is a shame that they have dropped in price so much because it merely encourages people to buy them for their children, or for idiot teenagers to take out loans only to get up to their eyeballs in debt.
There are some good kid owners of these cars. But frankly, unless mommy and daddy have got your back 100% of the way, you have a great full time job, or you recently won the 50k scratch ticket on your way home from school, the cost of initial purchase, insurance, and upkeep are simply out of reach for the majority of people under 21.
In the end it all comes down to mentality and pocket. If you have a good mentality and don't drive like your pretending to qualify for JGTC, do mods appropriately, get a car tuned, and set up before "uppin' da booooo0000ooost" you can keep the car running well and in one piece. If you have deep pockets you can make up for all your stupid mistakes and can afford to buy new body panels and rebuilds once a month.
Ideally however you want to have a happy medium, a mentality that is fit your level of driving experience and aptitude in how to appropriately modify a car, and a pocket that can maintain the hobby without going deep into debt on credit.
Kids though, definitely are far from what is keeping the "RX" legacy alive.

Well, I guess I can agree with the fact you can't give a sports car to someone that has little driving ablility, but I think you misunderstood my point. I didn't mean the legacy of the RX in the sense of putting kids in sports cars, but the thought and image of the RX. Granted a lot of kids should not be driving cars they can not handle, but I know of quite a few that could quite possibly out maneuver many on this forum and on the road. Granted, with age comes experience, but it doesn't apply to all. If you apply this as a general rule, all you're doing is stereotyping, and therefore fulfilling the stereotype of yourself and the older generations of not being understanding of others or accepting of anything other than what you know or understand.
You have to realize that everyone needs to make mistakes to learn from them. This applies to all ages. You can't tell me that someone that is over 30 hasn't ever gotten into a car crash. Hell, most of us on here have probably gotten into one fender bender or another. If kids never got the opportunity to know of these cars first hand, do you really think that anyone would even know or care what this car is? With this car comes a decent amount of respect (you can't really deny this, this car is a legend within its own right). If you think that making this car seem any more special by making it seem like this car needs an age bracket, you're sadly mistaken my friend. It's not the age, but the mentality of the person driving it that makes the car.

I love the way that people stare at my car when i drive. Maybe because my systems is up to loud. But when its nice out, the sterio is up, and the car is running well is the best feeling to just drive a great sports car. You have to love how many looks you get from people wondering if its a viper or porsche.

I also gotta add, I love how it feels you're driving on rails. Every time I get on her, it's like I'm carving up the road...simply amazing. Now having that feeling at 120+... What a car...

Personally I like when i'm going on lunch break in my car and dressed hella ghetto and I pull up and get out, and people look at you like wtf?!? expecting some older, wealthy person to get out of it only to find me, a grungy looking 18yr old with messy hair and dirt on his face. Gotta love that!
Also love (and hate) when people ask if it's turbo. Even after hearing my vented blow off valves, not to mention the fact that you can hear it spooling. Oh yea and the fact that they are were ALL made with TWIN TURBO. lol Or how you get asked to race for 500 dollars, cuz the guy in the honda knows that's the only way he can call you a ***** for not racing. LOL

How it is actually just as fun to drive, as it is to look at and ride in.
Also, how the dude in the Red 360 Spyder stared at my car as he left the intersection going opposite past me......... His look was like "Whoa what is that, I need to get one of those.... (unfortunately for him, it is too much car for him to handle HAHA)
I couldn't help it LOL =)
Oh, yeah, I almost forgot about the time I just washed it and was on my way to go repair a customers car at her house. I came flying around a curve and braked hard turning into the neighborhood when a very hot 20ish chick was pulling in . She was driving a new Mercedes Hatch. She pulled into her drive, and i pulled into the lot 2 spots down from here house, waved, and parked. She actually pulled back out of her driveway and came over. I got out of the car in my greasy clothes and i hadn't even showered that day yet. She quickly asked "what kind of car is that!?" I could have told her it was a early 90's or late model Ferrari and she probably would have replied "that's what i thought".
I could totally tell she was a money hungry chic...... too bad for me, I was in my mechanic jeans and shirt. She looked like a pampered princess.... I would have just taken advantage of her though LOL. That was too cool. I have never had that kind of reaction from a car.

I don't own one yet, and I've been going back and forth on whether or not I should get one, but I've pretty much decided I will. What draws me to them and makes them special to me:
1) From the time I've been into cars and paid attention to/been able to recoginize models, I've without exageration seen around 5. And this is as in years, not months. Call it wanting attention, but I call it wanting something unique.
2) Although they have their problems, the rotary is just so different. It represents a new challenge and learning experience for me, and when I finally start putting mods on, it's good to know I'll really get decent power gains and my money's worth.
3) Back in the day, my dad was going to buy an FB and race, but in the end just couldn't afford it. We really don't have a lot in common, but when I started talking about rotaries and getting an FD, he actually started showing interest. I kind of look at getting one as completing what he set out to do, only better
4) The owners (at least this board) are more into what I am as far as improving a vehicle. There's a lot less focus on rice, aero parts, and neon lights, and more about making the car actually go fat rather than look it.
5) I like two seaters.
6) I'm young, especially to own a car like an FD, but believe me when I say pretty much every part of the purchase will be from me working my *** off and having no summer vacation (30-40 hrs per week last year, plus around 15-20 during the school year, and this summer 40-whatever I can get). It feels really good to know I'm buying something like this without having to depend on my parents.
7) They look friggin amazing.
8) I really won't even race it outside of practicing myself (I don't even like drag racing), but it's good to no longer have an intimidation by Porches and heavy domestics. I really think I'd have too much respect for it to run it hard like that just to prove something to somebody I'll probably never see again, but it's like life insurance; even if you don't use it, it's good to know it's there.
And...uh...everything else has pretty much been said

I love how the plastic for the most part stays in decent shape compared to the fc. The general design of the car is just like a night and day difference, leaving it practically perfect compared to others.
But.......What I love MOST about the fd.....
The thing I love most about my fd is pulling out the rotary and dropping in an ls1, creating a supercar with better gas mileage, more low end torque, more reliablilty, cheaper parts, losing 100 lbs from the twin turbo setup, and ripping out the soul of the car leaving it as an empty, souless, lifeless husk of its former self, then selling the bastardized cars for a profit, and doing it over and over and over again until there are no rotary powered fd's left in the United States. It's a total Absolute V8 FD DOMINATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!
MWWWWWHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

same here about the turbo part lol
on my way home, i take this one street all the time because my street is a one way so i have to go onto this street to get around to my block..anyway, i get out of work everyday the same time so when im approaching this block, its around the same time, theres always these kids hanging out of this same house all the time and maybe they're waiting for me (thanks fellas ) or maybe they're just hanging out but idk, whenever they see me coming from the beginning of the block, they all stop what they're doing and stare as im coming along..sometimes they'll be on the street too looking, sometimes not..anyway one night, they were on the curb/street part and as im coming along, going about 30mph in 3rd, i heard one kid say as i passed by, "yo those things are turbo?"..and when i heard that i started to laugh..
how can you not know its turbo when they can see a big front mount, loud *** turboxs RFL (real ****** loud) BOV i got and know that 3rd gens only came in twin turbo..
i love it

With sports cars, (and almost any car), if you are too "high" above the car, it can have some very odd looking curves and lines.
However, the FD looks awesome straight on & down low, from the side, straight on rear, and all 3/4 angles...
It's when you "cower" some height above the front view it looks odd, or certain rear shots, however, you simply can't complain when you compare it to other cars.
I'd say the M3 has much similiar attributes, however it's "Box/Sedan" look is almost (to me) considered a different Genre to look "Good" doing...so I don't consider it even a runners up.
The interior looks great all the time, and to answer this thread's question:
My favorite thing is above all, the performance. This is why I look past the small odd things (engine parts, reliability issue, some bad angles with the way it looks). I love the power that is meshed with great handling, almost perfect. Definitely well worth the price.

Just this past Saturday at a car hangout, I heard a girl telling the guy standing next to her "I would have sex with this car", referring to my FD.

Man you guys get a lot of nice remarks from people. I tend to get really akward stares, like what is that kid doing in that car. I am almost 18 now, and recieved the fd when I turned 16, no tickets and not a single scratch on the car. I payed for it my self, I worked for almost 2 years saving up and finally bought my 7. I pay for insurance and every single mod that is done to my car, and I could of easily just asked my parents to buy me anything I want as they are relatively wealthy. Anyways, I get alot of weird stares, and people tell me they dont like my car with no explanations and they drive some type of van. Although, I do recieve alot of compliments on the car, mostly from older people and from kids who know I can drive as I usally tear it up on our local road course. Other than that I love the car for what it is, coming from a town where you see a porchse 7 or 8 times a day and a rx7 once every two months, it is a nice feeling. Hmm and the highschool girls really do not care what kind of car you drive, as my buddy has a supra and we get girls but its not because of our cars. Anyways just another 17 year old, with no tickets and payed for the car myself. No matter how much disrespect this forums shows to its younger owners, though some do deserve it, I do appreciate all the help especially from members like majhik, goodfellas, turbojeff, herberlenny etc etc. Without this forum I would have a broken down 7, and what makes me really love my 7 is only not the car alone but the rx7 community.

I didn't even know this thread came back to life.
Its good to see that everyone loves these cars..
So, how about what do you dislike about owning an FD??
I can't really think of one.. except maybe watching bunch of idiots trying to own one, doing stupid sh*t, and blowing them up!! That gets me...

why do I love the FD?
1. Unique car
2. awesome performance
3. How close we are in a rotary community.
4. Love when Ferrari owners give me thumbs up on the road before I smoke them (360 Modena)
5. Most supra people hate us.

nah i feel different
the e46's have a good stance from pretty much every angle..the FD has its bad views from certain angles, almost giving it a "normal" car look..its hard to explain, i guess if your car is dropped with rims, its a bit different but a stock looking fd with stock rims will show some ugly sides at certain angles..
