A bad exhaust leak can do this, also if you haven't had the brake booster recall done you can get fuel smell from the brake booster.

My car had it when I bought it. I had the recall done (Mazda hadn't shown it was done) and it didn't do much. The main cat to catback gasket was all messed up, so I replaced that and the smell was gone.

I had a similar problem not really just during boosting, but it caused a engine fire and a $3800 bill. Might be a good idea to get it figured out before too much driving. Just my $.02

Most likely your brake booster check valve. It's in the hose on either the passenger or driver side, depending on whether you've had the recall done. Several people including me have had this symptom and fixed it with a new recall kit, which can be had for about $18 from Ray @ Malloy.

The fuel pressure regulator increases pressure as you boost. Eveidentally you have a leak somewhere and it only happens at higher pressure. This will only get worse so get it fixed or you'll have

or

And i couldnt even find the pics that I have seen that were the worst...

witepsycho,

There are several places that could cause the problem, however, you'll have to start checking them off one by one.

If you are ONLY getting it under boost (i.e. you can't open the hood and smell a fuel odor while the car is idling); I would start checking the following:

1. Brake booster check-valve
2. Fuel line connections (on the rats nest and FPD & FPR)
3. Injectors
4. Lower intake manifold gasket

Those are about in order from easiest to hardest to check. If you are leaking fuel, usually it will stain aluminum (if enough has leaked) so you can check around for that as well.

If you haven't had the brake recall done, take the car to a Mazda dealer - they will do it for free. It's SUPER easy for them to do - two easy to get to hoses, takes literally 1 minute and a pair of pliers to do the job. I even let our Mazda dealer do this while I waited.

also check when your fuel filter was last checked, sometimes when its clogged or dirty, the fuel leaks by it, but dont do too much driving whatever it may be

^^

yeah dude that's no joke. Get it fixed now.

I had a 93 with 36k and it lit like a Chirstmas tree .

Now I've had my 94 for 6+ years and I'm still scared of fuel smells.

It didnt appear to be loose but it must have been slightly because it was visual sticking out.

If you have a fuel odor under the hood while the car is idling, it's not the brake booster.

Run a search for "FPD". It's often done with a hose job - it's deep under the UIM attached to the primary fuel rail.

I have a few pics in my Hose Job Writeup at www.davidgeesaman.com
