What's the average operating OIL TEMP?

Hey guys,

I was just wondering what rating I needed to get for my Oil Temp gauge.

Would a gauge that goes up to 250 degree F be sufficient enough for the FD?

I did a search already, but could only find operating temps for water.

Thanks in advance.

While I haven't hit that high on the street or auto-X, I hit 250 F oil temp on the third pull on a dyno session. My normal oil temps (non R-model) vary from 190-225 F depending on conditions.

A oil temp guage the reads 250F is higher than you will probably ever see but it will work.My R2 oil temps stay in the 180F-195F range on the street,on the highway 168F-170F at that temp the oil is not even going thru the coolers.

Thanks for the info Juliof, that second R-model cooler is actually very effective. It seems to lower oil temps by 15-20 F. I might just have to do that upgrade at some point.

Unless you race I think the stock twin oil coolers are good enough. They will keep oil temps in the 180-200F sweet spot. I have mine sealed all around so no air can escape every bit helps.

To bring this back from the dead...I was curious about this myself, since the other day I was sitting in traffic, and my oil temps shot up to around 205...made me sweat there for a sec. Usually I have temps around 170-180 I believe...but yesterday it hit 205 solid, would stay there for a little, then all of a sudden drop to 200, then eventually slowly rise up to 205. My FD is an R2, so it has dual oil coolers. Should/could I still be seeing such temps even at traffic?

And at what point does the oil go through the oil coolers? (Also, in an R model, does it go through both oil coolers, or does one open before the other?)

EDIT: I'm about to do some driving on both street and highway, and I'm going to monitor the oil temp to double check the normal range I gave above...

You have zero to worry about. The oil flows from the front cover, through the passenger side cooler, then through the driver side cooler, and then back to the oil filter pedestal. The stock t-stat opens at 185F or so.

Man, you guys are paranoid about temps!
