What type of oil to use in car?

I talked to various people and some people tell me to use synthetic oil while others tell me it's bad fr my car. What should I use? I went to the local Jiffylube and they put in castrol, is that good?

I use Castrol GTX. Syn oil has been known to produce residue with the way it burns off. Regular dino juice works great, stick with it.

I just made the switch to Royal Purple 10w40 synthetic from Castrol GTX 10w30.

The more research I did regarding this issue, made me want to make the switch more and more. So far, everything has been good.

Noticably smoother, seems to run a little cooler.

You trust Jiffy Lube with your 7? You have more faith in the minimum wage oil changers than I do....

how can you tell whether or not it's leaving a residue?
I'd stick with the non synthetic 10w30

Granted, I'm not tearing my engine apart and checking.

I haven't heard of anyone having problems directly related to using synthetics-just people scared to use synthetics due to the Owner's Manual warning.

Considering what a simple procedure an oil change is, I could not agree more!!! I would NEVER let those clowns close to a car, yet alone an RX-7 jeaz. Tom

Oh, Castrol GTX 20w50

you might want to try 10w30. You are in a cold climate so the 20w50 might be a little 'thick'. Just a suggestion

I was using dino 10w30, now i'm using 10w40 synthetic.

Some articles I've read about dino oil say that the bigger the gap in the viscosities for a multigrade oil, the more junk they have to throw into it to try and stabilize it; therefore, try to get the grade that has the smallest gap between the weights.

Jack up the front of the car.
Take off the oil filler cap (the one that says OIL)
Slide under the car and losen the oil pan plug
Put something under it to catch the oil with
Finish removing the plug and let the oil drain
Take off the oil filter (right in front of the firewall on teh drivers side)
Put a little oil on the new filter's o-ring
Put the new oil filter on and tighten
Put the drain plug back in the oil pan and tighten
Fill up your car with new oil via the oil filler neck
I put in about 3 1/2 quarts then put the cap back on
Crank and let run for a little while
Check the dip stick to see how much oil it registers
Add at least 1/2 quart more (in most cases)
