Huh? how did you pay for ur car? U sound like someone who got the car from his parents, and didn't have to pay for anything.
I have parents that are well to do, but I refuse to ask them for anything or take anything from them (that includes tuition). I consider it to be a defamation of character, but that's just me.

But to answer ur question, having a job usually helps. I am a softwer engineer, and I have done most of of my mods within a year after I purchased the fd (It was stock, except dp)the only reason it took so long was because I did all the work myself during off time.

Laid off now. I pay for everything myself, just see my sig.

The biggest mystery is what AArotary does for a living??? I bought my car the same month he bought his and don't see how he had the time to do all his ****. It must always be in the shop.

I'm a college student. I have a 1990 300zx and a 93 RX7. I have worked my *** off since I was 15(now 19) to get what I have. I also pay for majority of my school. I recently moved back home to save a little money before I transfer back to UT next fall. I got my FD about a month ago and so far I have a strut tower bar, Koyo Radiator, Boost gauge, Air/fuel guauge, gauge pillar, and down pipe.....As soon as I sell my Z, I'm having the engine rebuilt with a 3mm apex seals and a street port, rebuilding the turbo's, Greddy FMIC, bigger injectors, midpipe, catback, intake, and put on my power FC and commander(in room). Once summer rolls around, I'll pick up another job(manager at public swimming pool) and hopefully get some 18's, a headlight conversion kit, and a body kit. That's the plan anyway.

Manwhore.

seriously, my FD funds came from the sale of another car. reading this forum I knew exactly what I wanted to do going in and budgeted accordingly. Got the car, started modding almost from day one, usual stage one street mods (I refuse to use supra terms on the RX7) short of the I/C, had fun then sold it. Funniest part for me is got back into previous type of car for even less than before so going through that one now. Rinse, repeat? not for awhile at least.

at parties I say I am a high-tech refugee. self-employed is best if you can swing it. what kind of skills do you have, what work interests you?

I'm a full-time student and work 2 part-time jobs to pay for my ****. The key word there is JOB apparently with all of your "parents????" comments you don't have one. Thats a place to start.

I'm a Digital Artist, currently working at a graphics house, looking to break into the gaming industry (my web site www.stierdesign.com ). Was a fine artist before, went through 4 long years of art school. Paying off my RX-7 soon and looking at getting another car to add to my collection, either a Subaru SVX or 2nd Gen RX-7.

Full time college student with a part time job as an accounting assistant. Basically work, save up, then buy what I need. It is truely hard though. Once I get a "career" not to be confused with just a job then I should be able to fix her up a little faster. I am nearly 20 and I have worked since 16 at 5 different jobs (3 at once at one point) and just save. I guess managing your money but it depends what you manage it for.

I was a mechanical engineer when I bought my 93 used in 1995. I'm now a patent attorney with the same car, new engine, PFC, M2 large IC, DP, PFS catback, new transmission. I would never ever work two or three jobs to own a car because in the end, you're supposed to be the owner of the car and your life, not the car.

Right on man, I save all my money for my car. I don't waste money on useless stuff. I learned that the hard way. I actually had people at work ask me if I sale drugs....lol. They waste all there money on booze and eating here, spending a little there....that adds up.....FAST!!!! But to tell you the truth, I wouldn't have it any other way. I like saving my money for my car....nothing else makes me happier. Speed is intoxicating...lol

I am a director of network operations and also do a bunch of network security work on the side. My key is to keep all debt gone and to live in a sane manner. Once I knocked out the debt and quit eating out everyday, I suddenly had LOTS of money. Dining+Alcohol=Little $

I am the manager of a mom-n-pop record store making $9 an hour and I also do basic work on cars part time for $10 an hour in my driveway (working on my friend's cars doing brake work, basic engine stuff). I also go to school full-time and since my dad works at UC as a landscape architect I can spend most of my money on my car and having fun. Basically, the key to owning a sports car and modding it is to budget your cash. I spend about $40 a week on the necessities (cigarettes, gas, food) and I earmark about $60 a week towards my car (insurance and mods). I hate handouts, as I am a firm believer in working hard for something you want...plus it makes you appreciate it so much more.

I just wish I was making more money...

I'm a regional sales manager for a sealed lead acid battery company. I bought my 93 R1, 1 1/2 yr ago, at 50 k miles. Now it's at 64k miles and I have already spent about 8 grand upgrading my wheels, suspension, brakes, rebuilt 5- speed trans, radiator, cat back exh, and some few other OEM parts.

I have spent enough and hope to keep my car running reialble for as long as I can withou spending more money on replacing the engine, or big ticket things like that.

Gee, if I didn't have to deal with the Princeton tuition bill I would have had an Rx-7 years ago. Right now I'm hunting, though, and I may end up getting one tomorrow. 95 mbm base. If it's in decent shape I'll go for it.

Anyway, I have worked since I was about 12 throwing papers, and I have held various occupations since then ranging from construction worker to clerk at a ham store to janitor to software developer. (The software developing helped a lot). I also have a computer fettish which pretty much nullifies my means for piling on aftermarket parts.

Oh yeah: aside from cars and computers I'm really stingy

{edit}
Slowraxe: The SVX is a cool car but it had arguably more reliabilty issues than does the Rx-7. It also comes only in automatic.

Hey ErnieT, are you in Local 5? There was a period this summer were I was working at Blue Plains. . . I've gotta hand it to those plumbers. . .

I teach for a living (5th graders). Money is decent.. but could be better. Kids sure are great though... I highly recommend it for anyone who doesn't need to make lots of money as it yields many intrinsic rewards... and mucho time off.

My parents definitely dont hook me up. I go to school, work 2 jobs. Network manager, and waiter. Both bring in pretty good money. I tend to only have money available for upgrading in winter and summer... cause school doesnt get in the way of work. Guess what? I'm going to teach too

I am 18, and paid for my 95 FD with my own hard earned money from working as a mechanic for a couple of years and doinf other odd jobs. It is in the shop now for a Street port and race springs and seals. Full exhaust, intake, and a Power FC are all coming soon. BUT I AM STILL TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW I AM GONNA PAY FOR THE MODS! Port jobs, exhausts, intakes, and PFCs arent cheap!!!

I am a supervisor in the Information Technology Department of the Methodist Health Care System in Houston Texas.

Bought my R1 in July 1992. Did not start modifying it until about 1995.
I did all the mods on my cars including building the current engine.
For the last two years I have been working on other owner's cars and now use this spare income to pay for my goodies.

-----------------------------------------------------
POWER MODS:

Intake: M2 hard pipes with K&N filters.
Non-seq turbos with clipped turbine wheels.
Compressor outlets enlarged. Turbo housing
modified for smoother exhaust flow.
Enlarged WG. About 8% more flow.
Efini "Y" pipe set.
Blitz FMIC.
Greddy throttle body inlet elbow.
Secondary vacuum throttle plates and their
center support removed.
The complete intake system is port matched
to the metal gaskets from the turbo
compressor outlets to the side housing
intake manifold gasket. Intake port sizes
are stock where they open up into the
rotor chamber, but they are enlarged externally
and smoothed. Even the ends of the turbo pipes
and IC are chamfered to reduce turbulance.
The exhaust is ported.
Engine rotating parts were dynamically balanced.
Mind Train down pipe.
Shane Racing resonated MP.
HKS turbo cat back exhaust.
SR power pulley.
Racing Beat aluminum flywheel.
ACT street/strip clutch.
Apexi PFC with commander.
NipponDenso high performance fuel pump.
1200cc secondary injectors.
Craine HI-6R.
Taylor spark plug wires.
------------------------------------------------------
SAFETY MODS:

J&S safequard.
Fan mod switch.
M2 large aluminum radiator.
Fog light plastic brackets removed from radiator inlet.
Aluminum blocking plates used for radiator sealing.
------------------------------------------------------
Suspension Mods:

Brembo brake rotors with EBC green pads.
Ground Control coil overs; 550F, 400R.
Tokico Illumina shocks.
Adjustable front and rear sway bar end links with rod
end bearings.
Engine torque control rod.
------------------------------------------------------
