Okay this piece is on the rear subframe it just bolts on. Its some kind of support brace. There are two. This is the drivers side one. Also does anyone know where I can get one aside from the dealership? I need one for the drivers side.

 

These came on the 94+ models and were not apart of the 93 models. It is some form of extra bracing Mazda apparantly thought was necessary but Ive never seen any literature on it, nor have I ever honestly looked.

 

Well you hit the 94 part right on the head. Now does anyone know where I find one?

 

Check the parts section. Anyone parting out a 94/95 will probably have one.

 

I've been aware of that bracing but never read anything on the rationale behind it. If anyone had info on exactly what prompted the bracing...what it was designed to fix, I'd be interested.

where does it bolt into? right below the dif?

 

friend has a 94 fd at my house for winter, just look but couldnt see much with my cell phone under the car since my droplight broke. looks like its something similar to what the 93's have across the trans tunnel with the extra arm? no idea what the advantage is tho

 

To add to what has been already posted:

They extend from the rear portion of the car (to the side of the diff) forward.

 

They are lateral bars that connect the rear subframe to the chassis on both sides of the diff for more support. Contact Fritts Flynn he is a great source for used parts

so, if I were in the market for bracing my dif, would I want to buy a dif brace like banzai/ kgparts one?

or do these stock "dif braces" offer enough support

or... the combination of all 3 parts?
now that I know what they are how functional are they?

 

I think it would be difficult to retro-fit the above pictured brace onto a 93. It would require some welding.
The braces don't do the same thing. The above pictured brace ties the sub-frame to the chassis, apparently to prevent rotation fore and aft. While a differential brace would tie the differential to the chassis and PPF.

 

I see. theres that little additional piece on the 94 where it bolts onto that the 93 doesnt have. I personally have no problem with welding. but for what its worth its probably not worth the extra hassle. does anyone have any info on how effective it is? I didnt even know it existed in the 94 til someone pointed it out, kind of like the glass sunroof.

 

The only function that I can see the braces performing are to possibly reinforce the rear sub frame. It has absolutely no connection to the differential at all. It goes from the sub frame to the actual chassis. As for welding them on in an attempt to retrofit I think you would be wasting your time. I dont have a 93 but if it doesnt have the braces i dont believe it has the provisions to bolt to the chassis either. In that case you would have to weld the braces to the chassis therefore making it impossible to remove the sub frame if needed.
