I picked up my auto tranny when I had it out several years ago and the thing weighs a ton. During my manual swap I noticed the manual tranny is very easy to pick up.

So I wondered if anyone ever weighed them. Your auto tranny weight seems about right, but I think the manual weighs a lot less.

you think the tranny weighed a ton, try the differential, holy crap that thing was heavy for something that small compared to the tranny.

Yea I pulled that too, I'd say it's as heavy as the manual tranny. But short of the engine, the auto tranny is heavier.

It's been awhile but I've shipped manual trannies UPS, IIRC they actually weigh slightly less than 100lbs.

Cast iron will do that.

I got 112 lbs. for a 5-speed, dry. Of course, since a bathroom scale was involved, it could be a couple pounds in either direction.

112 lbs. isn't ****. I lifted my entire assembled rear subframe onto the tranny jack by myself before rolling it under the car.

funkin'a, what did the bathroom scale say that weighed? Was the cobra differential heavier, lighter, or who gives a ****, it can take more abuse?

The Cobra differential (fully assembled) was 72 lbs. vs. the stock differential at 77.6 lbs. (-5.6 lbs.)

The stock rear subframe weighs 30 lbs. and I removed a minimal amount of metal from it in the conversion process. (-1 lb.?)

The Cobra cradle lower half was 5.4 lbs., and 3.4 lbs. for the rear bracket. I didn't weigh the stock braces that were replaced, but they were probably around 2 lbs. for both. (+6.8 lbs.)

The hybrid 300M axles (fully assembled) weighed 22 lbs. each in comparison to the stock axles at about 19 lbs. (2 x 3 lbs. = +6 lbs.)

I didn't weigh the suspension components, but I suspect that with the hubs, they're probably 15-20 lbs. per side, and there were no changes, besides the polishing and removing the brake rotor backing plates.

So basically, the stock assembly probably weighed about 178 lbs. (based on 15 lbs. per side for the rear suspension pieces), and the modified setup weighs about 6.2 lbs. more, give or take, or about 184 lbs. Yes it's a little heavier, but it's also far stronger. The biggest difference, of course, is that the stock case was cast iron and the Cobra differential case is aluminum.

Yea the manual tranny wasnt too bad moving around as long as it wasnt some odd angle like 3" off the ground underneath a car only 3ft in the air. :s The automatic was very very hard for me to carry alone.
