Videos: Right way to Tune?
...Another thing I notice was that I didn't see or hear a bov in your car. I see alot of movement on your air filter when letting off due to surging. That could explain why your turbo smokes and possibly broke your thrust bearing and tear up your compressor and turbine wheel. It is also possible that metal pieces from your turbo went through the engine and damage your engine...
Pineapple said only one rotor and one housing was damaged. The turbo was working fine (other than the oil catch can). My guess is the apex seals damaged the turbine blades, but I will run your scenario by Pineapple and see if maybe broken turbine blades caused the engine to go.
I've never seen/heard anything more than internet rumors about compressor surge shattering compressor wheel blades, this seems unlikely especially given that you did in fact have a BOV hooked up
I have only seen one but it was due to a bad thrust bearing causing the compressor wheel to hit the housing and took piece of the blade out. Other compressor damages I have seen were usually caused by un-tighten compressor housing or foreign object entering into the turbo.
Ok, Just watched the 2nd video again. I still hear some compressor surge. I saw the BOV where you described (black Tial BOV). Do you know what spring you have on the BOV? it shouldn't be higher than 7psi spring.

Thats my thoughts as well. A lot of the jap high hp cars don't run bov's. I could see worn bearings + surge likely causing damage though.
The BOV came with a 7psi spring, but I bought a second spring, I believe it is 5psi. I will check the receipts.
Wow, this is a sad story. I am sorry to hear about your bad luck. Here is another suggestion. Call and speak with Steve on the phone (super nice and helpful guy) and see if you can fly him up there to tune your car. It will still be cheaper than the $1000 you just paid someone else. And he is one hell of a respected tuner here in the states. Good luck with the new motor.
