turbo whine?
Has anyone ever heard a turbo whine? Mine does and it started after my secondary turbo stopped boosting. I just want to make sure that i need to replace the turbos and its not something possible smaller. I pulled off the black plastic elbow on the primary and the shaft has a little play, but I can't "decide" whether its too much or not since i have no idea, but thats why im here.

The whine is a little high pitched but not like screeching. Sounds like the turbos trying to spin if I rev it, but rubbing slightly perhaps and it smokes when they try to boost.

My old set made that high pitch sound when it was spooling hard. (only on the primary turbine) Kind of like the R.R. jet engine thats on Bowing 777. Boosting and everything else was fine. I actually liked that sound. My freind said that he can hear me comming from couple of blocks away.
Some has told me that whinning sound comes out when your turbo is getting old due to the shaft becoming lose. I took out my turbo and it did not have much of a shaft play or oil leak. I wonder what was causing it.

The loud whine you describe can be an indication of excessive shaft play. It will get louder until eventually the blades jam themselves into the compressor housing and most likely will break. You can visually inspect the turbo, you would be looking for score marks on the intake of the compressor housing. I had a set die that way once.

Well I checked the "front" turbo, not sure if thats primary or sec. Havent checked the rear one but someone told me not to drive it until i get them replaced so i guess thats what i will do. I really wanna just go around the block to see if it will boost.

Your primary is fried. Remember you can't really make secondary unless you are making primary!
This was my old set, they whined and only boosted 3 psi, no secondary either. Ordered new(er) twins from Fritz Flynn. Bolted up and now I boost 10 to 12 psi with secondary coming online when need be.
Just order a used set from somebody and bolt it up. Should take 2-3 days to unbolt and bolt up the new ones. While you're at it you should buy a bunch of new exhaust studs and redo any ones that are broken or crossthreaded etc.
