Turbo oil leak - time to remove...

Thought Id share a few pics of my recent dive into an oil leak from the twins. Not enough to hit the garage floor, but annoying nonetheless. Y-pipe had a small amount of oil along the turbo inlets and the actuators are covered. Exhaust does somke, but car also runs rich. Hopefully its only the turbo oil seals or the PCV.

Looks familiar. The secondary turbo on my '94 has been leaking a little oil for about 20 years. A drop or two ended up on the garage floor after a good drive. More of it ended up on the bottom of the subframe and on the transmission under-cover. I'd wipe it off when I was under there to change oil, so it was not really a problem worth fixing. Little or no smoke in the exhaust. Little oil in the intake. However, a few months ago the drippage increased a lot. I've been looking for a possible new source -- OMP, oil return line, oil level sensor, oil pan gasket, etc. Past leaks included the oil pan gasket and the filter pedestal O rings. Anyhow there was old sludge and oil all over the bottom end, and I don't have a lift, so the cleanup and investigation for a new source has been going slowly, but it looks more and more like the old turbo leak has just gotten worse for some reason. I have more gaskets and seals investigation to do yet to eliminate all the other possibilities. I haven't checked the PCV yet either. Here's a pic of the turbo leak:

I have an extra set of twins from 10 years ago Ill probably thrown on and see. Not worried about the small oily mess, but the exhaust does somke with a storng smell (probably unbrunt fuel though). Got me thinking to source out leaks. Investigating whether leaky turbos are causing the exhaust smoking and figured Id post pics.

What does the exhaust smoke look like, and when does it smoke? Do you still have a cat?

Smokes blue/grey and from the start, idle and under boost. I run a high-flo cat with no air pump which doesnt help.

Mine produces blue/grey smoke upon cold start and when it is first boosted, but is clear otherwise. OEM cat and emissions except for the precat. Maybe the difference is that your primary turbo is leaking more while my secondary is.

Possibly. Gonna connect the airpump and see how much that helps and move on from there

Do you have oil in the intake tract or just the turbos?
how is your PCV valve?

PCV seemes OK but will replace anyway. Slight oil in intake, the usual.

If you swap out the turbos, once you're done and ready to start pull the EGI fuse and crank the engine until you have good oil pressure. Starting turbos dry is REALLY hard on them, especially if the turbos have been sitting a long time and the oil is long gone in their journals.
