Tranny issues
Ok, i was driving and wasnt really doing much, did a couple pulls but thats it. was on the interstate and down shifted to 4th and did a pull for my friend to show him how the twins work. And i shift into 5th and there is nothing there. I pull over, and its stuck in 5th. Well i get it out and when im in gear all it does is spin the driveshaft just a little bit and locks up. I tried having him push me but it is just binding up. I put it in nuetral and it is reverse?
any ideas what happened, i have a jdm transmission with about 30k on it that i bought on here.

You guys have got to do better at picking your titles for these trans. threads. I was kinda reluctant to open this one.

Sounds like you broke a shift fork, leaving it in 5th gear. Now when you shift to any other gear other than 5th or neutral, you've engaged 2 gears.. not much you can do without pulling it apart.

ok, well what about if i do it all myself?
I have a spare transmission sitting around, but the output shaft cracked.
its not a jdm one though. would that make any difference? and its 5th gear synchro was getting bad.
Basically i cannot move forward, only backward. forwards in any gear even with the clutch in is bound up.
But i can move forward with the clutch in in reverse (or neutral because it is reverse now)
how hard is it to dig into the tranny. I did the differential myself without any help.
Would i just have to be careful? I am pretty good at working on things, i never have gone to a shop.

wow..i talked about getting a 5th gear synchro replaced and it is a BIG deal. RP quoted me 9 hours of work just to get the tranny out, torn apart, synchro replaced, tranny put back in....and he does this all the time...

Hey if any of you guys find a better way of doing things, please snap a pic, I'll add it to the writeup, and credit you.
For example, I'd love to to try the dual pry bar method of pulling bearings that are seated in the housing. But I haven't, and I certainly don't have a picture of it.

If you're interested, I bought a bunch of parts for my rebuild beforehand, including new shift forks. I figured mine would be worn down and new forks might tighten things up - I don't think it mattered at all. They weren't even close to being out of spec, but I replaced them anyway and saved the old ones. So if you want some used shift forks in very good condition I'll sell them for a good price.
