Tranny doesn't go in 5th nor reverse when hot
So i am on the track with my car. I do a burnout in second gear, run a pass, no problem. 30 minutes later i do a second burnout, when then the car won't go in reverse nor 5th. I still managed to run the pass with the other gears. I let the car cool down a good hour. When i am on my way home, the car shifts into 5th and reverse with no problem. What could be the problem? I know that these transmissions have problems with 5th and reverse but they don't correct themselves. Could it be the selector? How about the tranny oil?

Bad 5th gear syncro. It will correct itself after cooling down but only for so long. I am going thru it myself for the last couple years. only time it acts up is at the dragstrip after repeated runs

I had the same problem with mine this past weekend. Did anyone get this resolved? I'm just looking for some information to pass on to my transmission guy for the rebuild.
Sorry about resurrecting an old thread but doesn't seem to have been answered.

Try changing to Red Line Synthetic Oil - ShockProof® Gear Oils - Heavy ShockProof® since you track your car. I had a broken (in three peices) 5th gear synchro. It would want to kick back out, so what I did was go to neutral and slide left like I was going to 1st or 2nd and that seemed to line it up then back over and in to 5th. If you can see the stick move as you give and let go of the throttle then your snychro is broken.

You can get just the synchro replaced with either the updated Mazda version or most likely they will sell you and aftermarket version as well as tell you that you also need all the needle bearings replaced and if you don't accept the $2k bill then you won't get a warranty.

I had the same problem in a really old astina. When in 5th it would fight like hell to stay in, and then wouldn't go into 4th. Or back into 5th. Then broke the diff doing a burnout while drunk down a dirt road when away with friends. So I through the car away.
