ticking coming from downpipe area

i have done some searches on ticking sounds but mine seems to be a little different.

i have a very strong ticking sound coming from the downpipe area on *de*celeration. when i rev up i dont hear it, but as soon as i release the pedal it makes a very annoying ticking sound until it hits idle. this can be heard from inside the car. until recently there wasnt much of ticking sound at idle but is now getting worse. it seems to be related to the revs, so i would say it is exhaust related except that from the downpipe-back is all new.

worth noting: this sound was not there when i bought the car a couple of years ago but started to develop before i replaced any of the exhaust.

i left my car with mazda for an afternoon to see what they would say and had a very helpful note of "ticking coming from turbo area".. thanks mazda.

if anyone can give me any ideas it would be great. i really want this sound gone. thanks.

thats odd that its on decel...well anyway- check to make sure ALL bolts are tight. Even the ones that hold the tirbo catridges to the exhause housing. I believe they are 10 mm. If that doesnt work, you can always let the engine suck in some tranny fluid(an ounce or two) while the engine is running. This will create a lot of smoke from the teilpipe but you will also see some puffs of smoke from wherever else you have an exhaust leak.
the only other thing that I have heard make a sound(jingling) is the flapper door in the manifold. I dont think that would be your problem, unless you are hearing a jingling sound.

i really hope this is not normal.. it didnt use to do it, and it is slowly getting worse. i would like to believe that it is an exhaust leak of some kind but i dont want to clog my new cat doing the atf thing. what does the downpipe bolt on to? is it possible that this part is cracked and leaking?

Maybe because the Stock Precat has a mount that bolts to the transmission (or chassis, can't remember) at the end where it meets the main cat. When you put an aftermarket downpipe in, it won't have this mount. Just a suggestion.

I would also check the heat sheilds (preferrably the one on the passenger side engine mount), O2 sensor/wire, gaskets, etc...

it really depends on the sound.........

check to make sure everythign is operating and is bolted down correctly.

you can visually check for an exhaust leak (soot will be around the leak)

if everythign is ok i personally wouldn't worry. What else can you do? -everything works correctly and that's the important thing

is there a non-harmful way to check if and where it is leaking? i believe its coming from an area that i could not visually inspect. white smoke would be quite helpful but i read that atf clogs your cat.

Just raise the hood while running and stick you nose down there. If you smell ANY exhaust at all, it's a leak. Most people here say you don't have to replace the metal DP gasket when installing a DP. But I took that advise, and mine leaked. had to order a new gasket and go though the whole DP ordeal again, and now it no longer makes that noise.

there's a thread on this I just cant remember what the title was but in the thread they said that it is the turbo control valve or something like that you just have to tighten it shut so that way it will stop the rattle or as you say ticking...I have the same problem but still not been able to check it out...

"buzzing" might be another word to help describe it. super-fast-ticking-buzzing sound.

what part does the downpipe connect to? turbo manifold? is that known to crack and leak between there and the downpipe.

yea my first attempt i reused the gasket and had visually noticable exhaust leaking. when i bought a new gasket i redid it and the exhaust seem to go away but the sound did not.

i got under my car earlier to take a look and noticed the piece that the downpipe attaches looked reddish like it was hot but it wasnt.. weird. i started the car and got back under, trying to get closer to the sound. definitly seems to be coming from the turbo area.

i also noticed that the muffler seems to make a sound like "pah pah pah pah pah" along with the ticking. i knew the muffler made this sound but never connected the two sounds together. it seems to be echoing through the exhaust.
