Exclamation Thought I blew my engine...

I was taking my cousin for a spin in the FD yesterday on Winchester Rd. and opened it up on a long straightaway. Down shifted to 2nd and got up to about 7k, a big hesitation and BOOM... thick black smoke in the rearview mirror I was about to cry (really, I was). I pulled over at the next turn off and was shocked to hear the car running smooth. I shut it off and popped the hood and did a quick inspection and looked under the car for any coolant and/or oil. Everything looked normal and no unusual odors. So I started it again... everything checks out, nice smooth idle. So then I take off and now it accelerates harder and drives better than it did before... I'm dumbfounded

*What are your mods?

*Did you have an almost empty gas tank?

*Did you happen to see what boost level you hit?

maybe you just unclogged your cat/hi-flow cat with your spirited drive... does the exhaust tone sound any deeper?

Maybe that boom was backfire. I have dp catback and hi-flo and sometimes when i redline it and change gear, and press Accelerator i hear a boom or pop or something from exhaust. I think that's a flame to be.

I only have HKS dp and K&N drop-in filter, I think I was on 1/4 tank of gas, and the boost might have hit about 10 or 11.
The "boom" was a nasty metallic sound, that's why I thought I blew the engine.

NGK. Plugs are barely a month old, maybe 700 miles on them.
