There's 3 bolts holding the housing. One on top, on to the right, one to the left. The first two are visible, the third one you can find by feeling for it. Loosen the alt belt all the way and you should be able to get a 1/4 drive socket on an extension to the bolt.

You've got to remove the pulley, which pretty much requires removing the air pump. All this is in the Service Manual located at: https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/94-fsms-available-download-449950/

No you don't. I replaced my t-stat last week and all I had to do was loosen the alt belt to do it.

But some can do it without loosening the belt...

I would think if you have anything other than the stock pulley setup you would have to remove the water pump pulley, I changed mine without removing the pulley but mines the stock setup.

thanks for the input everyone. Yea, I guess im going to have to try and find a socket small enough to fit between the bolt and the pulley. its a very tight fit.

Wow, sorry for the confusion that I caused. I meant "belt" but I typed "pulley." Thanks for correcting me, everyone. I replaced my thermostat this month, and I couldn't get it out without removing the belt. I was able to do it by simply unbolting the air pump rather than removing it completely, but it's much easier to work in there without the air pump in the way.

Don't take my word for it, the official instructions are on pages E-14 and E-15 of the Mazda workshop manual. It's pages 185-186 of the PDF.

Here are some photos; I had considered writing a how-to but wondered if anyone would want to see it.

The first time I replaced my T-stat, it was dark outside and I didn't notice that the gasked wrapped around the thermostat. I initially installed it with the gasket on one side of the thermostat, and it didn't seal correctly. As the saying goes, "Do it right or do it twice." This is the second time, with the gasket in the proper location. The thermostat should sit in its place easily, you shouldn't have any trouble lining it up if the gasket is installed correctly.
