Whistling from turbo area @ partial throttle

Just after I added the hard pipes from the intake to the turbos I noticed a strange whistling noise from the turbo area at partial thottle. If I accelerate under load or when coasting it goes away. It is not present under major boost or vacuum, just around a static, nuetral RPM/load point.
Anybody ever have this too? Any ideas? It's starting to get annoying!
TIA

Regards,
Frank

Hmm... Could it just be turbulance (Or whatever)? My old integra whistled when I installed an intake... Dunno though. I could be way off..

Double check clamps and make sure it's not a leak!

sounds like it might be the blowoff valve. did you disconnect the output hose while doing the hard pipe install? it vents a little under light load while still under 0 psi.

ya, i agree with the BOV. I assume your boost pattern is cool and its not air leaking from somewhere?

make sure that couplers to the intake pipes and the IC are nice and tight. I had the exact same problem (at 4-5k rpms and around 5-8 lbs of boost I got a very audible whistling noise) and it turned out to be these.

Couplers are tight, boost is very strong (13-14 PSI), and to re-iterate, the whistling (or whine) is not apparent while under boost or vacuum.
I was suspecting the BOV but I'm not sure.

I think it could be two possibilities....
1. It could be the gasket from your y-pipe to your intake elbow.
2. Pulley?

I had a whistle as well it was a small hole in the rubber tubbing going from the turbo to the IC pipe..

It was just as the secondary turbo kicked in then would go away. Drove me nuts.

After really paying attention tonight, here is a more definitive description of my symptoms:

- No load throttle, just about any RPM range, and about 16-18 inches of vacuum it will whistle. If I coast or accelerate ever so slightly it'll quit. It sounds like the sound you get when blowing air across the top of a bullet casing. It's not real loud, mostly never hear it when my stereo is on, but is still kinda' annoying.
Hopefully that description will ring some bells with someone out there.

Regards,
Frank

Might or might not even be close... But someone with a whistle (Screetch) in the engine bay had a bad check valve in the ACV. Just an idea. Hope you get her fixed!

Same **** happened to me.I replaced the plastic air pipes with the aluminum ones and then I kept hearing a screeching whistling sounds when cruising but not when under load. Also it only happened whenit was hot outside.I disconnected the electrical plug to the air pump and the noise went away.Try it.I bet thats what it is because what youre describing happened to me.

I have the exact same thing. A quiet whistling at no load that immediately goes away with any boost or engine decel. Mine sounds like it comes from under the LIM and I assumed the ACV valve. Mine has since been swapped and it made no difference. I have no vac leaks, boost leaks or performance issues; just this noise.

Also disconnecting the air pump will get rid of that dreaded moooing noise that sometimes happens.Especially if you have an open air intake.
Quick tip: If no one has noticed there is a fusebox near the air intake.Relocate it to the center of the car and look below where it used to be..If you notice theres a plastic lip that blocks air from entering your engine bay.Its about an inch and a half wide and about 8 inches long.If you manage to find it, its near the radiator, cut it out and you should be able to open up the air passage quite a bit.Which in turn leads to your intake. It should help out with the hot air problem that open air intakes tend to suck up.Cutting that piece of plastic will definatly bring more air to the intakes.i dont even get why its there. It serves no purpose. It just stops cool air from reaching your intakes.Yet another simple and free mod to do.

Why would you disconnect your air pump if you have a cat converter? You'll toast/clog the cat very shortly thereafter.

I would only do this while troubleshooting. It would not be a permanent fix IMO.

could that maybe be that the turbos are producing sound as they are spooling up or something? I don't know.

Did you guys ever fix this problem? I recently installed 850cc injector in primary fuel rail, and replaced 2 turbo control solenoid. Car is boosting fine now, but I'm also hearing this weird whistling noise, happens only between vacumm and boost transition, goes away if i let off or start boosting.. It seems to be comming from the driver side of the engine, maybe the intake pipe coupler.

weird, any ideas guys?

I don't have air pump, so that's not the problem.

Wow, old thread!

The funny thing is I have forgot all about this. I either got used to it and don't notice it anymore or it actually went away.
Now I'm going to start listening for it again. Great!

it sounds like the turbos spooling. adding hard pipes makes them incredibly audible. so when they are spinning at lower rpm it is easier to here them. i dont know my 2 cents
