Temps after shutoff

Sorry about the repeat. The forum was borked there for a second and it submitted the thread, but none of the text... no edit button either

Anyway. What are your temps after shutoff?

I went home today for lunch and when I got home my temp was 190. (I drove around for a bit, boosted once...) Let the turbo timer go for one minute... and went up.

When I came back out of my apartment after 30-45 minutes... I checked my coolant (no reason really, just been doing this once a week out of habbit.) it was good.

When I got into my car and started it up, the temp gauge went all the way up to 210! I backed out, and it got down to 200 w/ in <30 seconds. And then after about 2 minutes of slow driving in first gear out of my complex, it was down to 190. By the time I got to work 5 minutes later, 180.

So is this normal? I have an autometer electrical temp gauge. I almost think it is the gauge because when I opened the hood to check the coolant it wasn't very hot at all. Warm yes, but not hot. I've opened my hood after driving for a while to let the heat out when its been 200+ and it was hot... not like it was when I opened it. But then again the guage measures water and not engine bay temp....

Any ideas?

Do you have a downpipe? Have you done the fan mod? It is very common to see extreme heat rise after shutdown... A downpipe and the fan mod can greatly reduce this.

Steel downpipe yes... fan mod no... not yet anyway.

quick write up of other engine based mods...
Koyo Radiator
ATR Steel Downpipe
Bonerz Freeflow cat
Koyo Metal overflow tank
Hose techniques vacuum line kit
Hks High volume intake
Hks Free flow exhaust
Greddy intercooler

Yea I knew heat went up after shutdown, but 190 to 210 after 30-45 minutes?

Very likely.

Heat soak! I've seen this on a stock motor with DP, fresh turbo coolant lines & T-stat, aluminum AST, & the Fan-mod running for the 10 min!

Any suggestions? Is this even bad? I want my motor to last as long as I can... I'm not overheating I know, but I want my FD as cool as possible. Call it a crusade.
I plan to do evans and the fan mod sometime down the road, but not right now. I am still breaking in a new motor and turbos.

Pop the hood and prop it up at shutdown. If you have a garage, a ceiling mounted fan works very well. The fan's good to have in hot weather anyways when working in the garage.

Hrm thanks. I guess I missed that on over the weekend (I'm a work junkie).

I'm cool with heatsoak (pardon the pun), I'm fine while driving.

I guess I'm looking for a benchmark. I pop my hood in my complex too. But since I only have covered parking (on the waitlist for a garage) I don't leave the hood up. I sit idle for a minute or two. Then take the key out and let the turbo timer take over. I then open the hood and shut it, cover my car and walk away. Though today I didn't cover it as I'd be getting back into it quickly.

More or less, has anyone done any research? If so, how high of temps should I see after letting the car sit after x amount of time. Should I worry about a measly 210 without the car running?

I may not be overheating, I'm probably just over reacting. Blame the rx7 I love it too much!

Holy Crapola. Do you have a ecu upgrade? If not with those mods you don't have to worry about heat issues, you have to worry about BOOOOOOOOOOMB. I didn't see the ecu upgrade when you mentioned parts, but I am sure that you do, you seem like you know FD's.

I have the stock ecu upgrade (remapped).

My next upgrade plan is a pfc.

I always pop my hood and park in to the wind as well as let my car idle for about 2-5 mins every time i come home and shut off my car, it never seems to heat soak to above 180 f. when i do this. when i park when i go out though, i usually heat soak to about 200 f. if i dont pop the hood (which is very rarely).

I think that you are fine although perhaps you should use your turbo timer to keep your fans on for an additional 2-5 mins. (to do this, just set your turbo timer to 2-5mins and then turn your A/C on when your car is off; then key on and key off)

That is basically what I do now... (however didn't do that when I posted the 210 temp)

sometimes I'll even run it with the engine for 3-5 minutes, turn the car off, and then turn the car back to power only... not starting it....

this will let the fans and A/C run without the car engine on afterward until my turbo timer runs out again. Works pretty good, but still my temps rise up afterward to 200+

I hooked up an 8"IC fan with two relays, one that takes signal from all the Rad fan power leads with diaods to keep the signals seperate) and one from a calibrated thermo switch which is mounted in the engine bay.

When the car is moving the air through the IC generally keeps the thermo switch cool, but when I stop and the temps clear a certain point, the IC fan will come on.

I just finished this. Heatsoak was the same for me before - in the 190 degree range, now after a lot of stop and go traffic, and some jambs, and 30 mins of heat soak, I get about 130 degrees.

I basically think that the 200 degree temps aren't that bad, in the short term. I think they lead to hardened hoses and other parts after time though. I still haven't decided if I should keep my control like this, to help with heatsoak and run the risk of draining my battery on a really hot day, or pull my power from a switched source, and let the fan run only when the car is on.

The fan mod may help a little - if you can be bothered to go through with the arming procedure every time. But it only runs for a short time, and the engine has a lot of heat. Does anyone have any heat soak number with the fan mod used and without it?
