Tape to seal oil cooler ducts
Tape to seal oil cooler ducts
What kind of tape do you guys use to seal your duct to the custom oil coolers.
I just bought a set of dual oil coolers that seem to have this heavy duty black tape on it and I'm wondering where I can find more.
I suspect something like duct tape would not hold up to the heat from the coolers? So what will?
Thanks,
Eric

Gorilla tape is good stuff, significantly stiffer than the average gray duct tape, but it's by no means permanent. If you're looking for something to last more than one season, as XLR8 has already suggested, fiberglass & resin. An alternative would be carbon fiber cloth/fabric and the appropriate epoxy.
gorrila tape is nice quick fix, fiberglassing and resin is prob the best solution but messy... id go with dmoneys suggestion, aluminum flashing from home depot with a few rivets would be ideal IMO...
ive worked with fiberglass multiple times and just made a duct for my IC to rad outta aluminum flashing and wasnt too shabby... im going to use the same method with my oil cooler duct (since the rubber piece was falling apart/fell off)

I made oil cooler ducts out of the rolls of pre-preg tape used for making casts (like when you break an arm). You can get it from any online medical supply store, it comes in black, and all you do is dunk it in water (cold water makes it set slower), and roll it on.
I built them from carving foam bucks, and clear coated them.

Well the ducts I have already wrap around the cooler's but I was just looking for something to fill the small cracks around them so just a bit of tape should do the trick.
Just because it says gorilla on it doesn't make it ok to duct tape your car together.
I like the idea of using the right materials on my vehicle and something tells me that the adhesive on gorilla tape isn't cut out for 200 deg F and above temps. Maybe HVAC foil tape. Look on mcmaster.com they actually have real temp ratings for their tape.
Gorilla doesn't even list an upper limit for their tape temp range.
