Tachometer and Odometer electrical issue

Issue: The odometer and tach went out recently after installing a rewrapped harness. I have a pfc and the RPMs read out on the commander, just not on the dash. I am also getting 5 beeps when I turn the key to the on position. I'm not sure if these issue are related or they are two separate problems. Link below is a video of the beeping.

I've double checked all the grounds on the car and the connectors from the ECU. I haven't touched the steering wheel (stock) and the airbag light doesn't illuminate so I'm thinking the beeping isn't an airbag alarm. Everything was working before I ended up switching the harness. I haven't checked the connectors behind the tachnometer and odometer. I dont think it's the connection since the odometer does display for a brief moment after I disconnect the battery and turn the car into the on position.
Any ideas would be appreciated!

The beeping sounds like the airbag one. - check the CPU 2 connections?

Check Tach connection to speedo? I had a speedometer go out and searched for the capacitor replacement thread and replacing those fixed everything. (rpm was on PFC but speedo/tach/odo failed)

Also read somewhere disconnecting the battery draining whatever power is left in the system (hit brakes) - then reconnecting can fix the issue.

not sure if any of those will help

I managed to get the tach and the odometer working again, however the airbag problem still eludes me. The air bag light illuminates and then goes off, then the beeping starts. I've checked the FSM and it doesn't quite seem to cover the issue.

This car just doesn't give an inch.. so the odometer went out for good now and I still get the 5 beep but no airbag light. I have confirmed that the airbag like works
Problem 1
I took the cluster apart and found this mess... any suggestions what I need to replace other than he whole odometer. I've looked up a thread with all the part numbers for the components just don't know which ones I should replace. My inexperienced eye says like everything that looks burnt .
Problem 2
when I turn the key the air bag light goes on and then turns off appropriately. I still get the 5 beeps.. any suggestions?

HobbeZ, I came across your thread today and wondered how your circuit board repair went? Did the just got done figuring out how to fix an FD odometer help?

You can also check out the FD Speedometer-Odometer Circuit Board - Odometer Components thread for parts.

Hobbez,

Did you ever get the speedo board repaired? What about the air bag error?

Cheers,
George

Its more likely that the capacitors are just shot. The electrolyte in them breaks down over time and is known to leak out all over the place leaving the mess you see there. I replaced the caps on mine and my dash has been fine ever since. It's certainly cheaper than buying another (probably marginal) 25 year old instrument cluster. It's time consuming but certainly not hard if you've ever soldered before.

Hi Tim,

Thank you for sharing your success with capacitor replacements on your speedo board! It can be a time consuming repair as you suggested but the payoff is well worth it.

The purpose of my post is to get feedback from the OP. What worked or didn't work for his situation? And it would be good to have closure on his repair.

Cheers,
George
