Synthetic oil

What type and weight of oil should I use in my FD?

I live in TX and it never gets below 30 even now in the winter.

more than 3 days ago this was in the "FAQ for 3rd Gen & other useful links"

33) What kind of oil should I use?

There is no correct answer to this question. Some experts recommend synthetic, others insist on dino oil. What matters is that it gets changed on schedule – every 3000 miles or less. Some owners choose to change at 1500 miles since the oil cooler(s) does not drain during an oil change. The proper weight is 20w-50 in warm climates and 10w-30 in any place that gets cold in winter. Please rely on searches to learn this subject – new threads are far too common.

Stick with what is recomended by Mazda , a good synthetic 10w-30 is good for warmer climates 5w-30 for cold.20w-50 is to thick and not needed unless youre motor is using oil, it will also cost some HP because of increased drag on youre motor.

Pray tell, who are you, Mystery Man?

The FD is a weekend driver only, so no big deal on price b/c of low mileage.

And I have torn down about a dozen motors that used Mobil1, and after seeing the internals I am staying far far away from that stuff. Any time a person uses "Wal Mart" and "FD" in the same sentence, they are asking for trouble .

Mobil 1 15w50 in the Summer & 10w30 in the Winter. In hot weather my 15w50 holds up 'till about 1,500-2,000 miles, same results with 10w30 in the Winter.

What did you find that made you averse to using Mobil 1?

I'm using Royal Purple Racing 51, which is a synthetic oil. I've been using it for 3 years and never had any problems. Oil and filter changes are done every 1200 miles. Royal Purple Racing 51 goes for $10 a quart. http://royalpurple.com/

hmmmm....."a dozen motors", and the owners all used Mobil 1 huh? for how long? and how do you know the oil had anything to do with observed damage, considering the large number of unknowns involved?

my cousin rebuilds motorcycle engines which frequent 14,000 rpm and he swears by the stuff....the bottom line is everyone has their "pet" oil, but fuel dilution will degrade the oil quickly, no matter what you are running....I've been running Mobil 1 for years, change it every 1.5 to 2k, and my stock turbos are in pristine condition

You can't go wrong with Mobil 1, Although your Japaneese rotary might reject the good old Made In USA synthetic.

Yes, you should search but don't listen to lead sled. Sometimes the geriatrics on the forum love to bitch about things like taxes, not doing searches and the bitter taste that Geritol leaves in you mouth.

I doubt it. There's so many "American-made" products that have utilized Japanese-made (or other foreign-made) components for years with no problems...

And by the way, the rotary was designed by a German...

Wankel...I know he was german, but it took our freinds in japan to perfect it .

Now lets just hope those two don't team up together or we all may be screwed.
