Synchros

My 5th gear synchro is going bad and I need to replace it. However, I am not going to do a complete rebuild of the transmission. So, I was wondering what the part #, etc. is of the 5th Gear Synchro. I found a web site with a great price on it for synchros...but I'm not sure which one to get. Here is the link for a specific one:
http://www.mazdaformance.com/Merchan...egory_Code=470
Also, here is the link for all the different ones. There are two for the '93-'95 RX-7 and I'm not sure which one is right...I will try calling:
http://www.mazdaformance.com/rx7.htm
Please let me know which one I need put in my transmission.
1993 Mazda RX-7 R1
Thanks a lot,
Craig

Also, please let me know if this is all I need in order to replace the 5th gear synchro. If there is more...please let me know what I need and some prices/web sites of where I could get it.

it makes a grinding sound when you shift into 5th and you can feel it... it really sucks. like chalkboard fingernail kinda feel...

if you rev your engine while shifting it will help...

5th and Reverse are on the same shaft. It is very obvious if you have a broken synchro, and if you can't tell, you probably should be beating up on another car with a more disposable transmission.

Unless you race your RX-7 and are a mazdaspeedmotorsports member, you probably have the best prices with mazdaformance.

Don't take this the wrong way, but if you carefully read the FSM and couldn't figure out what you needed to rebuild the tranny, you might want to consider taking it to someone, since it outlines what is compulsory replacement, and what you have to check upon removal.

It isn't a very hard job, but you need to know what you are doing, and will need some special tools to complete the 5th gear synchro RnR...a few more tools if you go deeper into the tranny.

Just make sure you know what you are getting into!

You know that sign that goes something like:
I fix it, x dollars
You watch me fix it, 2x dollars
You already tried to fix it, 4x dollars

I just fixed my 5th gear synchro problem, or more accurately, another member did it for me while I helped, alittle.... Very little.
It's not a bad job, but you definitely need to know where your going. I would have never been able to do it myself. If you don't know exactly what part(s) you need, call Ray Crowe at Malloy Mazda. (do a search and you'll find a link and number) He will know. While you have the tranny out don't forget the front and rear seals.
BTW, don't wait too long. When I tried to pickup the old brass snchro gear, it broke in two. I'm told that I was very lucky as it is not supported while in reverse. If it would have fallen off inside, my transmission would have been junk.

Tranny's scare me. Get it done by someone unless you have help from someone who really knows what they're doing.

Thanks to all who helped!

I am fixing the transmission myself...or actually with the help of my brother in law. I will give Ray a call if you can get me his number. I just wasn't sure which synchro was the right one. BTW What is the FSM? I know quite a bit about transmissions and my brother-in-law is a certified mechanic who has rebuilt his own trannies on his race cars. Thanks a lot everyone, will let you know how the partial rebuild goes!!!

FSM = Factory Service Manual.

I will need to replace my 3rd gear synchro though. On the track I have sometimes problems upshifting into 3rd if I'm over 7k RPM... And 2nd gear synchro is causing some grinding... bah... I'll just replace them all.

When is a good time to replace synchros ? When replacing the clutch ?

Another thing to think of is how long its been like that. If its been broken a when it more than likely the metal has gone into your bearing in the tranny. So you might be prepared for that issue. Since your taking the tranny out you might as well replace the clutch that way everything is new and good for another 80k miles.

Anytime the transmission is already out of the car. The 5th gear synchro is pretty straightforward because it's at the back of the case. The others require complete teardown of the tranny all the way down to bare shafts. I wouldn't go that far unless you know what you are doing and honestly understand transmissions.

The 5th gear synchro was modified (improved) after the first ones started failing. Make sure to get the latest version.

My 5th gear synchro is fine, just 2nd and 3rd gear ones are problematic. I'll have a professional do it one I replace the clutch. How long does it aprox. take to replace all the synchros ?

When you call the dealer, they should be able to recognize that there is a new and updated part number in the computer and should ship you that one. I believe the number is located somewhere on scuderiaciriani.
