the 5th gear problem is from people aiming for 3rd and missing, so the synchro updating can't fix that. secondly it is a 20 year old used transmission.

thirdly there have been a few updates to the synchro. the 92-93 cars got an W501-17-725A, 94-00 get an updated W501-17-725B, and then 00-2008 it is a W501-17-725C. after 2/2008 it becomes a R512-17-26Y. the transmission was available in the Rx8 until the end in 2012.

so i guess, the answer is a no.

This is interesting to me... I bought my car with a slight grind into 5th during "spirited" driving and would like to know what can be bought to fix it.

That being said, I know you can buy used transmissions for these for 300.00 which makes them disposable in my opinion. But if I could have mine rebuilt so I am not replacing it all the time that would be worth it to me. (Side note, its been rebuilt prior to me owning it about 2k miles ago)

the 5th gear synchro isn't very strong, and its easy to hit 5th instead of 3rd, which will crack the synchro, and giving you a grind into 5th. since 5th and reverse are external to the main case, its easy to change the synchro, you pull the tail housing and its kind of right there.

Mazda has updated the synchro a few times, but it will still break if you break it. the shorter .825 5th gear will help too, as the synchro has to slow down the gear less than the .762 the US cars came with. the .825 was used in some US car, and then the JDM FD's with 17" wheels got it as well.

you should also be looking at the 5th/reverse hub sleeve, and the reverse synchro (they live a hard life), and if your trans is a 93 they had a stronger spring so its harder to get into the 5th/reverse gate. R503-17-550 i think. anything newer than 93 will have the updated one already.

Wow, thank you for all of the info! I am glad to hear I can just pull the tail housing off the trans and not do a full overhaul. I will give that a shot over the winter.

Thanks again!
