Sunroof Questions
I have a new to me 94 touring, and I have a couple questions about the sunroof.
First, when I press the button to open it, it doesn't open unless I press up on it. If I don't the motor will make noise, eventually start squealing, etc. Once I push up on it, it will then pop up, slide back, etc. It closes fine without assistance. First question, is this a common problem and is there a fix for it?
Second, when it's all the way closed, or all the way open, if you don't release the button the motor just continues to go and will sometimes squeal as well. Second question, are there supposed to be cut off switches that stop the motor at the ends of the travel all the way closed or all the way open?
Thanks!

Also fairly new 94 touring owner, glass panel. Mine has the 'push' issue only when it rains. So I think it's just it being an old motor. Mine will also just grind if I hold the switch, so I don't think there are cutoffs.

My 93 recently did that, I had to push up on it one time. I sprayed the mechanism with garage door lube, especially the small black plastic pieces at the rear where it raises up, and also the tracks. No more problems yet. I will say the black plastic piece on the left side could be wiggled, so I dont know if it was supposed to be that way or it is broken. If I have more problems I will look there.

This is incredibly common from what I understand. My car has been in the family since new and had done this for years where I had to push up on the sunroof to help it open.
I was able to fix the issue by applying a layer of Shin-Etsu around the rubber gasket, and cleaning the inside of the sunroof opening where that rubber gasket meets the body. This stuff really helped tremendously more than any other silicone lubricant, and brought life back into the rubber. From what I understand as it ages the rubber gets a little stiff, and the motor can’t overpower its resistance against the body.
I reapply the grease probably once a year, and haven’t had a problem since then.
Also, no there is no automatic stop when the roof is fully open. Never was. Just let go of the button.
Hope your car is giving you lots of enjoyment otherwise. They’re such a great driving experience.

Mine just did this yesterday for the first time. Right after washing the car I went for a spin and the sunroof would only half pop up. Instead of helping it I waited a little while and then on the next try it worked. And yes, mine has always never stopped as there seems to be no cutoff for the motor. I just make sure to time it properly to not stress out the motor. I'm going to buy some of that Shin-Etsu grease like others mentioned. Good luck!

Any one have tips to manually close the sunroof? Mine seems to be stuck in the open position. Trying to close it with the switch doesn't work, switch seems to be bad. Can hear the engines whirring.
