sunroof problems...

my sunroof has been unable to open without a little push for a while now, so i went and looked at it. i found one side of the track, a slider is broken (its like a plastic insert in the track) i ordered the parts from mazda, and today i went to put them in and i cant figure out how to do it....I went to unscrew a bolt that i thought might be holding the track down and the bolt just sheared instantly, and it STILL dosent come off! couldnt find anything on a 3rd gen sunroof and the exploded diagrams are worthless...what do i do?

Have you looked at the factory service manuals?

I figured it was somewhat normal to have to give a little push up every now and then. Not a big enough deal for me to try and fix it

its a sunny day so im going to rip this apart and see if its any similar to the way the fc sunroof is set up, you can check if you have the same problem as me, if u can move those guides back and forth the slider is broken, if I figure it out ill post pics...I got both sliders from a local mazda dealer for 35 dollars, as opposed to leaving it and blowing the motor which costs 300+

well i bit it and went to mazda, the guy said the entire interior surrounding the roof comes off and then slides out the tailgate, and that it would cost 300 for them to fix....since I already have the parts im going to do it myself

That is not always true. A wire can have a point where it is bare and will short periodically (from the vibrations of driving), but not show a short all of the time. For it to show on a DMM, you would ahve to test it at one of the rare moments it is shorting.

However, there could be other issues leading to a surge in taht part of the car. Any other fuses blowing? Had your alternator charging rate checked lately? etc...

I got this fixed, it wasnt THAT hard...sunroof now goes up without a problem! If anyone else is interested heres what I did...
1 Take interior panel off sunroof, this will expose 4 hex nuts, unscrew those to remove the roof.
2 Remove the fuzzy lining along the interior of the car, this should simply pull off
3 Take out the lights and roof switch by putting pressure on one side and pulling down, remove the screw holding the interior (8mm)
4 Pull down the back interior, its held by 3 snap ins, so just wedge your finger in and push it down
5 Open the trim along the top of where the door closes, I didnt remove this I just pulled it up and worked around it.
6 The sunroof is on a piece of its own, looking at there rear of the car interior you should see the motor, behind this you will find 4 hex nuts (10mm) remove these.
7 Along the side top interior of the car, you will find 4 brackets, each with 2 hex nuts (10mm) holding it to the body and sunroof assembly , undo these and take the brackets out.
8 After the brackets are removed, on the inner sides of the brackets you will see some strange looking hollow hex nuts, simply take the C clamps and washers off these and ignore.
9 If you've aligned the roof were you just took those nuts off correctly, the sun roof will now be pushable into the car. I just pushed the rear end down because it allows you to remove the rails, I think if you want you can pull the entire assembly out if not you will have to locate whatever is holding it in the front.
10 The rest should be pretty self explanitory, if you are removing the sliders like I was, you will have to take the 2 hex nuts (10mm) off and the phillips screw, and remove the slider closest to the rear so you can remove the guide. You can also then slide the entire rail back to make this easy....er.
11 Put it all back together and enjoy your like new sunroof!

Hope this helps somebody!

Mine has done that since I bought it. I just give a litle assistance and off I go. It's not worth the fix. A slight push to up it. Mine closes fine.

Mine does it too -- occasionally -- but only after a hard rain. I think on mine, the water swells the trim and makes the fit tight? A little tap and it is OK.

my 93 does this as well. It will open with a push and close on its own. I'd like to fix it, but I have no idea what parts I'll need.

My question is, should the motor stop spinning once the roof is opened or closed?

If I hold the button down after the roof is opened or closed it still runs.

Brought this back up from the dead, homie! At least you're using your search functions.

Anyways, i believe that it is normal to hear the motor still running even though it is completely open and or closed and you having your finger on the button. Nothing to sweat about.

yeah... didn't realize it was from 06.

Anyone have any pointers on what to look for?

My guess is it's one of the sliders or rails, but I also read something about an adjustment nut to control the speed of the opening and closing.

I'm new to this car so I need some pointers....

My first silver 93' went up with no problem, however my new MB 93' needs a little assistance to pop up. Once it's up it opens and closes fine. It doesn't really bother me.
