stuck in gear

my transmission is stuck in gear and i don't know why.
i was pulling the engine out of one car and putting it into another everything was working fine before the pull the transmission shifted smoothly.
i take the shifter out and remove the engine from the car then when i had the engine on the ground in my garage i put the shifter back in and i must of shifted it into one of the top gears 1,3,5.
now when i installed the engine into the new car it is stuck in gear and i can not get it out i haven't started the car yet but i can't tighten my driveshaft becuse the transmission is stuck in gear.

is it possible that u did a really shitty job aligning the clutch before install the tranny, i had a problem similar once, i couldnt get my car into gear after installing my motor, ended up having to drop the tranny and realigning the clutch,
doesnt make much sense when i think about it now though

My friend had a similar prob, his was the gear selector (If I remember correctly) just came apart. He needed a clutch anyways so he had that swapped out and they reassembled that as well and its been good as new since.

Good luck, hope its a easy fix

Can you move the shifter through the gear positions at all? If so, which ones?

It sounds like one of the gears shifted into position but the shift selector didn't put it there. Unbolt the extension housing from the tranny (drain oil first) and make sure all 3 select forks are in the neutral position.

you must have not reinstalled the shifter the correct way.

i have done this many times on motor swaps on 240's and my own 1st and 2nd gens.

look at where the pivot on the shifter goes. it should slide right into a cup looking thing

Transmission stuck in gear

I have a simliar problem. All of a sudden without any sign of a problem, the transmission was stuck in a high gear. Releasing the clutch stalls the engine. With trans in neutral, releasing the clutch the car backs up (in reverse). I can shift to 1 and 2, 5 and R, but not 3 and 4. Any one have an idea what it could be?

+1 most likely its the 5th/rev the spring on the 5th/rev rod can over throw the shift fork when it is shifted out of rev without the shifter in place or if the bushing on the bottom of the shifter is worn out causing the selector rod to get stuck in the N gate while the 5th/rev shift rod is in 5th. Its may be easier to pull the pan rather than the tail housing. the 5th/rev rod is the farthest one of the three towards the drivers side side. you should be able to pop it back into N with a small pry bar or long screw driver.

That is exactly what happen to me. The only problem is that I forced it out. The consequences were not reverse and fifth was WAAAAAYYYYYY to the right.

I bumped this thread because the exact same thing has happened to me. There's good info here so I felt no need to create a new thread.

Received a rebuilt tranny in the mail without a shifter. Installed it, with my B&M shifter in place.

With the shifter in neutral, it feels normal, but the drivetrain still spins. Can't shift into 1st, 5th, or Rev. Clutch is assembled correctly & bled. Push the clutch in & the pressure plate spins freely as it should.....

I will be pulling the pan this weekend as recommended above.... But I don't know much of what I am looking for. I will add that I know the tranny is good. Bought it from a reputable guy .

Any help would be appreciated.
