Strange question but..

Hi guys
I was just looking at pictures of someones project, they had removed their throttle body etc and had it all polished up.. When i looked at it, it seemed slightly different to mine so i went and had a look. Sorry the picture was crap, camera phone in the dark. It looks like a screw is missing where i have drawn the arrow... If it is, any reason it would have been removed?

Hope that image worked... never tried it before.

Cheers

Looks like where the cruise control linkage bolts on too, I may be wrong though.

Hmm the picture im looking at just has a bolt half screwed through it and that...*searches for technical word*... turny thing thats attached to the throttle cable sits on it. Is it possibly to do with the idle?

that is your idle screw (not to be confused with the air control screw on the underside of the TB) it sets the closed limit of your butterfly valves it should also have a small nut that acts as a lock for it.

Well my cars idle is a little rough. Would this have anything to do with it?

quick answer yes. because you are nearly starving the engine for air. this screw can be replaced if you can find one at a hardware store and i would reccomend it becuase if you dont set the butterflies rest then your A/F is going to be rich and therefore bog down until you open the throttle and let it breath

if you want to and this is by no means a permanent solution is tighten your throttle cable to the point that it is actually pulling somewhat with your foot off the gas this will open the butterflies just enough to raise the idle. dont leave this as its really just putting unnecessary stress on the cable and could result in stretching.

you can do that safely though for a few days anyways until you replace the screw

i dont really think any perrmanent damage would be likely just really crappy idle and a small delay when giving it gas to move, perhaps the odd stall. running rich does increase the carbon buildup as its not burning as thoroughly as it should at idle obviously most of the time in the car its not at idle so im pretty sure there wouldnt be any longlasting damage that could be a result.

dont worry about it at all just get the screw put back

Alright cheers for your help.

This morning i twisted it round to where it looks like it would sit with a screw in and the engine was revving quite alot higher than it should be...once i have this screw in, is there a way to down the idle again?
