strange power issue

Hey all,

Pretty new the rotary world, but im looking forward to learning more! I just bought an FD about a week ago and Ive been having a weird issue with the power. Basically...there is none, but its intermittent.

Sometimes she will get power, but as soon as I go to crank everything shuts off. After this happens, if i disconnect the negative and reconnect I get power again...then once i crank bam. everything shuts off again.

Battery is 100% and the same issue persists with two different starters. The only thing I can think of is the battery connections are maybe not getting the full power of the battery for some reason. Ive cleaned both cables and made sure they were tight.

Another thing that i have read is maybe the security system cutting power??? Not too sure about that one, as ive read it only cuts power to the starter, not the whole car.

Anyone have ideas?

I had a really frustrating problem that sounds somewhat similar but different but maybe it might help. The car electronics were all working, the battery was good, and the starter and fuel components were all good. The car however wouldn't let me crank the car everytime I tried. I eventually found that a couple of the fuses for the alarm system had burned out so after replacement, worked like a charm. I'm not sure I understand exactly when you say it shuts off everytime you go to the crank. You mean whens its already fired up and you go to the crank?

Its worth a shot. I dont think any of those fuses are blown though because the damn security system went off on me today. Ill double check though.

The cranking goes like this: put the key in the ignition and turn it just short of the crank position. All the lights come on, chimes, radio, fuel pump like normal. Once I turn the key to crank, everything dies. No solenoid click, no crank, no start and no more power to anything. If I pull the key out and put it back in there are no chimes, no lights nothing...as if the battery is dead.

But if I pull the negative and place it back then im back to the beginning. Is it possible I have bad battery cables or maybe bad cable connections?

A jump worked fine btw. She left me stranded in a parking lot a few hours ago with the same issue. I hooked the jumper cable up to the outside of the connector and got the power I needed so im assuming it must be a weak connection with the battery.

Thoughts?

You may just have a short in the battery cable. Removing it and re-attaching it may temporarily reconnect the short in the line.

I think it is just my positive cable connection after further testing. I took a wire I made and placed one end on the bolt that holds the fuse box to the positive and connected the other end directly to the positive battery post and all of a sudden all my electronics came right back on. once i removed it everything turned off

I also think its battery connection related . That happens to me when the terminals are corroded and need cleaning.

Yeah the fact that I had power as soon as jumped it from the bolt instead of the terminal clamp shouldve been a dead giveaway. Im getting a replacement clamp tomorrow. Hopefully that fixes all these electronic gremlins...

Thanks for the responses everyone

So far so good! Installed the part this morning and the car has started twice so far. Hopefully all my troubles are over.
