Unhappy strange noise....

okay i need some help here when my ignition switch is in the on position i can hear a noise coming from the coils/tb area. it goes eeeeeehhhhhhhhhh and then starts to break up and goes slower and slower until it stops. a little better discription is it sounds kind of like a clothes dryer when you open the door only quieter. i just replaced the plug wires if that helps. oh and it's an fd. any help would be greatly appreciated as i am completely confused. thanks.

Sounds like your ignition coils are going south. You have idle and hesitation problems while cruising?

Does this noise repeat itself every time you turn on the key, or just once after the engine has been running? Some form of vacuum/pressure leak would probably only happen once, where as with electrical items it would likely repeat each time the key was turned to ‘on’, although you might have to give it 5-10 minutes to cool off between tests.

You could also try using about a 3 foot long piece of large hose, say ½” fuel line or ¾” water hose, as a stethoscope to help identify the real source(s). Get someone else to operate the key while you hunt.

it's deffinately electrical and i know that it is in that small area because if i put my hand on the tb i can feel a vibration the matches the sound and if i touch any where else i cannot feel it. i'm going to pull off the elbow and see if that helps to find it. i also think that it is the ignition because when this problem started the car would putter like it had a seriuos misfire (it was kinda loud) and would eventually drop in rpm's until it died out. now the car wont start at all and i have new plugs and wires and some grounding straps.

Sounds like ellectrical/ignition related alright. Might want to be aware that there may be some issue(s) with eary model ignition wiring harness. Apparently there was a tendency for them to arc over to a ground wire. Here's the thread.

I found the culprit! It is the little solenoid on the back of the uim. Right where the tb bolts up. Does anybody know what this is? Thanks for the help!

no i took out the double throttle control. it is right below where that was and it is electrical. i guess it's more of a sensor not really a solenoid. but it is about three inches long and cylindrical. it goes into the uim in the inlet for the primaries. thanks for the response though.
