Strange Audio Issue

New owner here, trying to keep my 93 stock and running into a strange audio issue.

The car has never had aftermarket radio installed.

My antenna mast is broken, but when I manually raise it an turn the radio on I only get faint sound from the rear passenger speaker. Everywhere else is silent (not even static).

When I try to use the Tape deck or CD player I get zero sound. I would assume there is an amp or wiring problem, but then why would one speaker still work? Any idea before I start tearing into the interior?

Do you have the plain stereo or the Bose stereo?

I'm guessing you probably have the plain stereo. First off, the antenna mast isn't a hard fix - there's a lot of write-ups out there.

90% of the FD's out there don't have the stock stereo. The 90's weren't kind to stock stereos - everyone was ripping them out of every car to put in CD players since stock stereos were REALLY damn crappy back then.

All that said, the stereo itself is probably needing refurbishment - probably leaky capacitors and other problems from time and heat. Also possible the stock speakers are shot - they make noise, but they may be dry rotted and sound like crap.

The plain 93 stock stereo had 5 speakers - 2 in the doors, 2 above the storage bins, one in the center top of the dash. The center speaker has an amp that's (I think on 93) behind or beside the glove box. It takes the speaker signal for the 2 front speakers and combines them to the center speaker.

This is all in the shop manual wiring-wise and the Body Electrical Manual has component troubleshooting.

Thanks Dale,

I do not have the Bose, I have the R1 double DIN. I have been searching over the wiring manuals and FSM. I am just not very well versed with audio systems. Seems like if the head unit crapped out the radio wouldn't tune or push sound the the speakers. If the amp was bad the one speaker wouldn't receive any sound at all.

Just seems like a strange combination that I am curious if anyone has had something similar or and audio expert knows what this sounds like.

The speakers are fed straight off the head unit. The center channel amp could mess some things up if it's no good.

Like I said, it's possible the stereo has a lot of problems itself. Most likely that's the source of a lot of the problems. There's just not much to the system in total - speakers, center channel amp, and head unit, that's it.

That would be unfortunate. Most of the repair places in other threads are gone or no longer touch head units

Sorry for pointing out the obvious but I don't see it mentioned in the thread...have you checked the actual condition of all of the speakers? Its possible they have become damaged due to age, or that something is up with the wiring between them and the radio.
