Stock radio still work without amps?
I bought my FC without a radio, and for a while I was using a crappy radio I found in my attic, but then I bought a stock radio. I plugged it all in and there was no sound coming out, but I studied my FSM and I saw that the stock system has a few amps. The last owner put in all aftermarket speakers, and all the amps are gone now. I can probably redo the back ones but the guy sliced the crap out of the front wires and those are probably unfixable. Should there still be SOME sound coming out of the speakers, or is the radio shot? Thanks.

if there are no amps up to the factory speakers, you're going to hear nothing. The stock decks put out a low output and the amp is what ups the sound for you.

I'm saving my cash to get a paint job right now, I got the radio for $10 so it was really cheap. So I should try and get a hold of some stock speakers to test it? I tried hooking it up to a cheap walmart amp and I could still hear nothing though.

The 89 and later use different plugs and wiring than the 86-88... it would be as much work (possible more, if you don't have the plugs) to put in a 89+ radio as it would be too put in an aftermarket radio (which come with wires).

I'm 99% sure its the headunit. If I hook it up with the continuous power wire plugged into the actual radio tuner, at first I would hear static (yes sound was coming out of the speakers) with the display flickering, but after a while the only thing that would happen is a popping noise every second or so. I started the car thinking it wasnt getting enough power. What happened then was the display would stay on, but the popping continued. I noticed after that, every time it "popped" the display went out, then came back on again. I put in a tape and got the same thing except the display went out like it normally does when theres a tape in.
Now I unplugged the continuous power wire, and the display stayed on continously, but I would get NO sound whatsoever. the same thing happened when I plugged the continuous power wire into the tape deck. Weird huh? I'd like to pick up a good functioning stock headunit and try that.

Hmm. I don't know much about troubleshooting stereo gear, but the stock head unit from my 86 GXL worked perfectly when removed. I also have another one that I assume works, but haven't tested. You can have either or both for $10 + shipping if you want.

Maybe, but I think the antenna hookups are different on the luxury/GXL radios. Can you take a pic of the back of it? I would love to buy the whole system from you, but I need to know 100% that it works before I pay a lot of money for shipping. I'll see if anyone locally has anything, the worst part would be trying to put the front passenger side speaker/amp connector back together.
Than again it would be cheaper than the local '7 junkyard around here. The guy takes all the cars he can find out of the junkyards and sell stuff for outrageous prices. He wanted $50 for a used radio out of a base model, and $200 for a stock CD player.

Sound like the previous owner rewired the car for an after-market radio.
To use a 18 year old factory pre-amp head-unit at this point, is more trouble than it's worth. especially since after-market head-units are so inexpensive

I know there was an aftermarket radio in there before, there are broken remnants of a mounting kit and wiring harness. I just prefer stock for now because it looks better and I can got one (hopefully) cheap.
