Question Spirit R brakes... Bigger than 99?

I can't find conclusive information on this, and have searched through every relevant thread I can find. I've asked Ramy to look into it for me (I want to order brakes now) as his website says they are larger than the standard 17" 99 spec brakes. For all my searching I cant find a conclusive yes or no answer to this question... well i can but its not definitive. I was under the impression that the extra "spirit r" addition was red paint and holes but would be happy to be proven wrong. Sooo... whats the verdict?

thanks, heath

If you read the japanese spec changes you see that a number of times from '96 on Mazda offered the RZ and some other models with "big brakes" "314 mm disks and wier 32mm fronts, this was repeated in '02 with the RZ and Spirit R models where the Spirit R's also got slotted rotors and red calipers

Quote:
The '02 rotors are even larger than the rotors used by the '99+ RS/RZ, I believe, which are larger than stock. More swept area, at the very least, and I'm trying to find out more details on the piston sizing, although they remain a single-piston "floating" caliper design. They also come pre-coated in red, with cross-drilled rotors.
He specified that this info came from Jason at JT Imports."

It is this quote that is on ramys (FDNewbie.com) page, and other places... and its the recurrence of this quote that keeps the "larger than 99 spec brake" myth going and unsettled. Who knows, maybe they are larger in some dimension... I just havent seen proof one way or another to put a nail in this coffin. -Heath

I can confirm that Series 7(96-98) RS have the 314mm brake discs with no cross-drilling or coloured callipers, as this is what I have.

I believe that this is a myth started by a spec change list that states "larger", but larger was in context of larger than standard issues, you coukld still get base models in '02.

I link to orginal mazda press release for Spirirt R: http://www.mazda.com/publicity/relea...203/0325e.html

for Type R Bathurst: http://www.mazda.com/publicity/relea...112/1210e.html

for RZ: http://www.mazda.com/publicity/relea...010/1018e.html

big brake was added in first in end 1995 with RZ edition , and after in 1996 on RS edition / 314MM X32MM in front and 314X20MM in rear.(17' WHEELS (17X8.5 ET 50 /rear and 17X8 ET50/front)
SPIRIT R come with exactly same specs as RS, RZ , only difference is : red power coated and slotted rotors.
