Someone set fire to my FD.

So some a-hole torched my FD at 4am parked in my driveway. I'm pretty sure it was a random thing because the fire department said it was their 3rd car fire of the night.

Just wanted to know how salvageable is this? Insurance told me over the phone that it's most likely going to be totaled even if the car didn't burn to the ground because of smoke damage. What do you guys think? How should I proceed? Will insurance let me strip the car of its parts before they total it, or will that affect the settlement value?

I haven't had time to check out the extent of the damage, but I'm going to guess that the suspension parts and gas tank including fuel lines are okay.

It sucks, but things could've been way worse. This way, there's a lot I can salvage.

WOW! Dude, that sucks!!! From the looks of things (provided the tank, fuel lines, etc. are ok) it looks like it just needs a new hatch, bumper and lights. How fucked is the wiring back there?

Many insurance companies will let you buy the wreck back from them and discount the price from the cost of the settlement... just depends on your carrier.

wtf... that has to be the most cowardly thing a person can do... I hope they catch that bastard who did this to your car and set his *** on fire so he/she can never be able to sit down again.

On the other note, it seems to me that it can be fixed with some work. Rear bumper, lights, hatch and a paint job should do the cosmetics. I'm actually more concerned about the rear electric wiring... You will have to do a hell of a lot of cleaning for the interior and make sure to get all the smoke dust out b/c it is very toxic for your lungs. I'm hoping you got full coverage on your ride? If you do even if they total the car you can take the money to fix her up better then before.

Total, settle for a HIGH value for your precious FD, buy salvage FD back, and do as you see fit for your FD. (whether it's transfer parts, or fix back to original.. you decide)

Good Luck.

if they want to total it, buy it back from them and then part it out and sell the rolling chassis if you don't want to keep it. that would make a perrrrrfect track car if it had a salvage title.

Don't let it go to a scrap yard.

By the looks of it, the worse should just be the wiring and smoke damage.

New hatch, rear bumper and some paint might do the trick.

As for those misfits, I wish I could catch one in the act.

Wiring should not be a problem. Smoke damage will be.

I'm sorry for you loss as well...these types of things should never happen! This is one of the reasons why I like to be extra careful about where I store my car, who knows about it, etc. This should never have to be the case, but unfortunately we don't live in the best world.

I hope things work out for the best. Seems like your keepin' a cool head, which is very impressive.

Most likely they will total it.

Yes, you can take off any parts you want to keep before they ship it to a junk yard. Typically they give you a day after it's assessed to grab anything off the car you want.

My advice: if they total it (and I think they will), don't buy it back. Grab your wheels and anything else off the car you want to keep and then purchase another FD (if that's what you want again). If you don't want another FD, just sell your parts on the FS section and put the money towards something else.
