There is an effective way to remove strong odors, and it ain't fabric softener. Trust me.
It's a technique that uses the gas ozone. There are firms that come into houses after there's been a fire to make the place habitable again. They use an ozone treatment. Some friends of mine had this done to their fabric furniture after a fire.
I don't have any personal experience with this, but I assume it would work on a car. The vehicle would have to be tented and then the ozone gas is pumped in. It absorbs the odor and neutralizes it. Again, I can't swear it will work 100%, but this is the technique the professionals use.
But there's a bigger question for the thread starter. Given how the prices of FD's have dropped an extensive reconstruction project probably doesn't make any financial sense.
Instead, he should probably concentrate on getting as much as he can out of the insurance company. It's also unlikely his policy covers all his add on equipment at full value. I'd get those nice rims off before the insurance company sees it and slap on any crap that fits the hubs.
Same goes for any other good aftermarket stuff. But the insurance adjuster isn't going to be fooled by a stripped car, so it's time to start asking friends for discarded parts, like that old stock air box, or whatever.

Who you gonna kill? It was 4 in the morning, no one around. No witnesses. No suspects.
People vent, post bravdo, make all kinds of threats. But it's meaningless.
There are plenty of ******** in the world. Any one of us could become a victim.
Pay your insurance. Wear your seatbelt. Vote Republican. There's not much else you can do.

too lazy to read other comments. sorry to hear about your loss, but you should be able to buy the car back from the insurance company for pretty cheap. I can check with my best friend since she's my insurance rep and see how any of that works. my camry was totaled out a few years back and i got the 6k back i paid for it -500 to buy it back.

Man that made me sad to see that. Who the F#ck would do that to someone's car for no reason at all.
It be worth it just to catch the ****** though. You would absolutely go to town on them, chop them up, put body parts in seperate bags, freeze them then dispose of parts all over the country.

Not the company
OMG; i've seen some pretty messed up stuff that people have posted about what happened to their cars but NEVER seen something to this extreme.
I hope everything works out for you in the end.

Tolerance? Of arsonists? Of gang bangers? They need some good old fashioned law n' order in that town, and they won't get it with the politics they have.
This torched FD is but one symptom of a city out of control.

don't try to fix it. even if u get it back up to snuff cosmetically, there's still going to be a record of the fire dmg. just get it written off, buy back the wreck, then get another fd and fix it up using ur parts. u'll probably come out ahead, just a lot of time and hassle.
my friend wrecked his fd in a spin. insurance gave him $15k. bought fd back fo $3k. bought a cosmetically good fd with a blown engine for $9k. had a mechanic swapped motors for $3k. made $3k off the accident and had a roller for spare parts (which i took advantage of, haha)
looks bad but dont worry too much

wow.... One thing I cannot tolerate is a coward.... What a cowardly thing to do to someone. It does not really look that bad though, I agree with all the others that say you should fix it if you don't really plan on selling it anytime soon. Even then take pics and document EVERYTHING you replaced when you fix it. That way should you happed to sell it at some far, far away date at least you have all evidence to show it was not a complete burn down and that it was repaired properly. Though, it will always have a bum title... Good luck with whatever you decide to do...

That totally sucks! Why people do sh** like that I never know!
It does not look too bad if the interior was spared. However, if the insurance totals it I would buy it back and find a clear title chassis to swap out your stuff. It isn't worth having a salvage title IMHO.

WTF! That sucks man! I'm really sorry for your loss, I hope they catch up with the bastards that did this to your FD.
I would pull all the good things off the car and sell them.

So some a-hole torched my FD at 4am parked in my driveway. I'm pretty sure it was a random thing because the fire department said it was their 3rd car fire of the night.
Just wanted to know how salvageable is this? Insurance told me over the phone that it's most likely going to be totaled even if the car didn't burn to the ground because of smoke damage. What do you guys think? How should I proceed? Will insurance let me strip the car of its parts before they total it, or will that affect the settlement value?
I haven't had time to check out the extent of the damage, but I'm going to guess that the suspension parts and gas tank including fuel lines are okay.
It sucks, but things could've been way worse. This way, there's a lot I can salvage.
