smoking on idle
I am having a problem where I am getting oil smoke out of my exhaust mostly at idle. It probably does it when I am driving but it is not as noticable. I have a brand new rebuilt motor with 600 miles on it and a brand new built set of stock turbos on it also with 600 miles. I noticed that one of the turbos has a oil leak on the exhaust side. Could it be that the oil that is leaking is burning inside the exhaust and that is why the smoke is coming out? And when it idles the oil has more a chance to collect therefore it has more smoke. I don't think it is a real bad leak because the oil isn't running all the way down the exhaust manifiold....it is pretty much burns right next to where it is leaking out from and my oil level doesn't drop that fast. I know the leak will only get worse if I leave it but I don't really want to take it off again just to put it back on. If I am going to take it off I am going to put back a single turbo setup. I just don't have the money for that right now.

first of all are u sure its an oil leak? cuz if it is then yeah that could be a reason why ur cars smoking...secondly taking the turbo apart is not as difficult a job as you might think if thats the reason u dont wanna take it apart again for the single turbo setup...so yeah if u knw for sure its an oil leak then 90% chance thats the reason ur cars smoking...while ur at it take a look at the condition of the turbos...cheers

Yes I am sure that is an oil leak. but like i said i it is not leaking that bad. I know it is not that hard to remove the turbos...I am just too lazy right now. Someone told me that I am running to thin of a oil. I am supposed to be running 20/50 but I am only running 10/30. Is this true?

hmm it shouldnt be burning that much oil dude...it'd probably be better to be prudent at this point n have the turbos looked at...lets not risk it eh?

So I took my car to a local rotary mechanic and he is stumped by this one. According to to him, it does not show the usual symtoms of a blown eng oil seal and does not show the usual signs of a blown turbo oil seal. I have no oil in the intercooler pipes as well as by the intakes. It does not smoke when you hold the revs up or when decelerating. He thinks that maybe the oil rings haven't broken in yet. He told me that I should just keep checking and adding oil as necessary and if it doesn't clear up by 1500 miles then he'll take appropriate steps from then. He checked the a/f ratio to see if it was running so rich that maybe it was "washing" down the cylinder. When he checked the plugs they were black and the oil looked like it came out of a carburated car. The a/f ratio was a solid 12.8-13.0 on idle. Does this sound plausible?

you know, that is a very good question.....but I would think that being that the motor is from Atkins Rotary, you would think that they know their ****. But hey, sometimes **** happens that it is out of their control....like maybe I did something wrong when breaking in this motor. I don't know what I could have done but maybe something happened.
