First prime the fuel system and inspect for fuel leaks. Injectors, FPD, fuel lines, and even the FPR have been known to leak.

If the fuel smell is intermittent, look under your throttle body at the purge control solenoid, catch tank, and charcoal tank. One of those hoses split on my car and I got fuel smell sometimes.

There is a rubber hose that connects the gas filler to the side of the gas tank. The next time you fill up, check that hose for wet spots and leaks.

It's very likely that there is a split somewhere in that hose, as it's a somewhat exposed hose that is subjected to various road debris. Mine had a little cut in it as well, causing what you just described.
