smell of gas when driving
when i drive my 1993 jdm rx7 i smell gas,it comes from under the hood,i cant see any leaks and it dosent make my gas disapeer,so is it running rich?or is it jsut normal to smell fuel?any ideaas thanks
Here's how it works if you smell gas, it's probably the fpd. If its not well change it anyways because if your wrong your going to be out of a car real fast
Fuel Pulsation Dampener
It's located at the top of the engine by the firewall, right by the center/drivers side.
See the gold capsule/bell thingy right over the right side of the UIM.

yes i do,i have been reading of a charcoal canister, where is that located?it smells mostly on drivers side right besideish the intercooler elbow?iunno if that helps narrow it down, sorry im new lol
It's being burned through the system and leaking around the engine. The FPD is right by the drivers firewall so atleast you can small it when it goes bad. It's probably the FPD. Order a new one from Mazda or the forums. Or get an FPD elimination kit from banzai racing.
I'm not sure what your talking about as far as a charcoal canister.

PS: Do not forget to release the fuel system and unscrew the gas cap before starting this process, or you'll have fuel everywhere when you undo your first fuel hose.

Hopefully that will help to start narrowing down when you are getting the small and from where. However, at some point, you are going to have to start getting dirty and removing parts to get a better look and test things.
The FPD is about 12" to the left of that circled actuator and about 6" down in the mess of fuel lines and vacuum lines.
If you smell fuel near the elbow, pull the elbow and have a look at the lines going from the engine to the charcoal canister. I had the line running from the purge canister (bolted to the throttle body) to charcoal canister pop loose. It's not fun when your driving instructor is the first one who notices the fuel smell :O

After you check the hoses under the intake elbow,. You can open the diagnostic check box. ( Near the drivers side front strut tower) Then take a paper clip and connect the GRND and F/P terminals. This will jump the fuel pump,..which will keep constant pressure on the system. Then look around at all the lines again and see if it is leaking or you smell fuel.. IF you do NOT smell fuel when the system is being pressurized WITHOUT the engine running. Chances are it is NOT an external leak.
Is the smell more evident when accelerating? I have had alot of customers cars and my own have a bad Lower intake manifold gasket. When under boost it would "vent" some fumes into the engine bay and would be noticeable when driving but almost impossible to find. (because there was no physical fuel leaking)
Just another thought and a way to test the system for leaks without the engine running. Just have to turn the key on

BTW: If for any reason you end up with the intake manifolds off,.. You had better spend the extra 90 bucks or so for a new FPD or get the elimination kit. Also the location of the FPD is tucked in tightley against the lower intake manifold under the rats nest
fun job to get to it. Better get the vaccum lines changed while you are in there as well. See how these cars become money pits
You can't do just one thing,....EVER!!

ok well im going to do some tests today on it,is tehre anything besides the fpd that could be leaking or wrong becasue thats a project i dont really want to start right now becasue i got the car 3 days ago lol
There are several things which could cause it. However, most them require just as much work if not more than the FPD. You need to start eliminating things which aren't causing the fuel smell to narrow down what might be causing it.
yes the FPD cannot be seen with the UIM on....at least not clearly.
it takes some work to get down to where you can actually remove it
ive recently started smelling fuel and it is the first thing on my to do list once i get the car back home from school
