Probably a leaking FPD. Search for fuel smell, FPD and for god's sake read the FAQ thread. You are in a potentially dangerous situation right now.

Here's how it works if you smell gas, it's probably the fpd. If its not well change it anyways because if your wrong your going to be out of a car real fast

Fuel Pulsation Dampener

It's located at the top of the engine by the firewall, right by the center/drivers side.

See the gold capsule/bell thingy right over the right side of the UIM.

It's being burned through the system and leaking around the engine. The FPD is right by the drivers firewall so atleast you can small it when it goes bad. It's probably the FPD. Order a new one from Mazda or the forums. Or get an FPD elimination kit from banzai racing.

I'm not sure what your talking about as far as a charcoal canister.

Charcoal canister is part of evap system that deals with gas tank pressure. FPD is attached to the firewall side of one of the fuel rails. You'll have to pull the UIM and work your way down from there. I'd replace the FPD (costs about $100 from Ray) but I'd also test the system for leaks before putting everything back together. That will show you if there are any other issues. You can do this by hardwiring the fuel pump (F/P to GND) and turning the key to turn on the accessories (not turning the car over). While you're in there you might want to consider other jobs such as a silicone/viton hose job, AWS delete, TB coolant delete, DT delete, etc.

PS: Do not forget to release the fuel system and unscrew the gas cap before starting this process, or you'll have fuel everywhere when you undo your first fuel hose.

Here's a post I made a while back:

https://www.rx7club.com/showpost.php...6&postcount=10

Hopefully that will help to start narrowing down when you are getting the small and from where. However, at some point, you are going to have to start getting dirty and removing parts to get a better look and test things.

The FPD is about 12" to the left of that circled actuator and about 6" down in the mess of fuel lines and vacuum lines.

If you smell fuel near the elbow, pull the elbow and have a look at the lines going from the engine to the charcoal canister. I had the line running from the purge canister (bolted to the throttle body) to charcoal canister pop loose. It's not fun when your driving instructor is the first one who notices the fuel smell :O

After you check the hoses under the intake elbow,. You can open the diagnostic check box. ( Near the drivers side front strut tower) Then take a paper clip and connect the GRND and F/P terminals. This will jump the fuel pump,..which will keep constant pressure on the system. Then look around at all the lines again and see if it is leaking or you smell fuel.. IF you do NOT smell fuel when the system is being pressurized WITHOUT the engine running. Chances are it is NOT an external leak.

Is the smell more evident when accelerating? I have had alot of customers cars and my own have a bad Lower intake manifold gasket. When under boost it would "vent" some fumes into the engine bay and would be noticeable when driving but almost impossible to find. (because there was no physical fuel leaking)

Just another thought and a way to test the system for leaks without the engine running. Just have to turn the key on
BTW: If for any reason you end up with the intake manifolds off,.. You had better spend the extra 90 bucks or so for a new FPD or get the elimination kit. Also the location of the FPD is tucked in tightley against the lower intake manifold under the rats nest fun job to get to it. Better get the vaccum lines changed while you are in there as well. See how these cars become money pits You can't do just one thing,....EVER!!

Regarding the fuel pulsation dampner, consult Page F-105 in the FSM.

There are several things which could cause it. However, most them require just as much work if not more than the FPD. You need to start eliminating things which aren't causing the fuel smell to narrow down what might be causing it.

yes the FPD cannot be seen with the UIM on....at least not clearly.

it takes some work to get down to where you can actually remove it

ive recently started smelling fuel and it is the first thing on my to do list once i get the car back home from school
