its people like you that **** me off

im 17 years old

i bought my FD when i was 16. people told me i would blow it up, kill myself, yadda yadda,

its possible to own one that young, i do all my own work, i have done everything from a full fuel system, to PFC and tuning. i am a week away from my 67mm turbo being finished.

it is very possible.
as long as you have money, and know how to read, and care about the car and its well being, you wont kill yourself, and you will be very pleased with the outcome.

sorry for rambling, i just see the **** all the time, and its happend to me, a year and 1/2 later i have a badass FD and have a lot of respect around here.

im 6'2" and I dont have much extra headroom in my fd with sunroof. You would probably need a car with out sunroof and bride lowmax seat with lowmax rails or something.

Its not the fact that he's 16 its just that he's young and still learning how to drive and thats a lot of power at that age. Maybe you were just mature on driving your car at your age but A LOT of young kids should probably buy like a FC if your that much into 7's, which does have somewhat of some power and could maybe run into a couple of things without getting that pissed off cause its somewhat of a beater. SayNoToPistons is just saying that it would be recommended not to get a FD right away

i don't think it's fair to say that just because they're 16, they can't do certain things, etc...if they don't respect their own RX-7, they will just have to learn the hard way that it needs to be respected

yes i'm 16, and i'm getting one with a blown engine so me & my dad can work on it together (he wants to bond before i go to college) and i'm very confident that i will take good care of it, especially since i will have so much work put into it with my dad and wouldn't want either of our time or energy to go to waste

i get where your comming from, i se how others my age drive... like fuckign morons. I guess i am mature for my age, and mature at my driving ability. FD is a terrible choice for a first car, i started out with a civic, did a motor swap, nitrous, all that ****, got it in the 13's. then got a DSM AWD, broke too much so i got pissed and got rid of it, then i got my rx7, which was in the 12's, then 11's, and now 10's hopefully

u just have to work your way up.

Listen Man, I Turned 18 in December and got my FD in October. Its been a stuggle owning a FD with costs wanting to do modifications ect. Unless you got an amazing paying job or a father that spoils you sick I would not recommened owning one quite yet. I would first let you know that when you buy a FD if you do, have a few thousand dollars saved up. They are not at all reliable cars AT ALL. And everyone is right, this isnt a good first car. I started out with 2002 Acura RSX Type-S, Then to a 2003 Mitsubishi Evolution VIII, and now to a RX-7. Willjs7 is right you gotta have the money saved up and you need to work your way up and not get to cocky. I am now 6 months later doing either a LS1 swap or going single. I needed time to get a feel for the car.

And whoever said that you'd kill yourself, dont listen to that. Drive smart, I've seen in a lot of cases, younger people drive a hell of a lot better than older people. I think thats just people envying kids who drive FD's.

agreed, the only reason people are negative about a nice car (even my friends keep saying that i'll kill myself) is because they're jealous

I recommend you get whatever you want. It's your choice, seek advice from you friends or something cause forums always got different opinion.

I'm 5'8" ~150lbs , and the car fits me like a glove. A friend of mine is a bit over 6 feet tall, and he fits inside the car, but he's pretty slim, probably under 190lbs. He complained about the legroom; his thighs touched the steering wheel. I doubt that someone 6'5", 230lbs will fit this car. The steering wheel isn't adjustable, so you'll have trouble fitting your legs under the wheel.

Your mileage may vary, try before your buy, etc. etc. etc...

Please read the following ADVICE carefully, with an open mind. I'm not saying any of this to offend you, I just want to pass along a few things that I learned (sometimes the hard way) when I was your age.

My opinion is that teens shouldn't drive FD's. They're not a good learner's car. If you haven't already learned to drive well in an underpowered car with decent handling, you will NOT develop good car-control skills in an overpowered car with very good handling. The handling limits of the FD are so high that you won't be able to recover once you've found them.

Whether you can admit it or not, teens simply lack the experience which develops the necessary skills and judgement required to pilot something with the power-to-weight-ratio of an FD. There are many things that can ONLY be learned from experience, and driving is one of them. It's a physical skill like running or playing basketball; you can't get better at driving just by thinking about it or trying to be careful.

What's more, mistakes, accidents, or lapses of judgement can be expensive or fatal in a car, and a high-powered car will cause everything to be happening at much faster speeds, which leaves less room for inexperience.

My advice to young people who want to own a fast car anyway: attend a race-driving school, it will teach you how to properly control your car. Start autocrossing, it's a very safe place to learn car control. Expect to spin out a LOT, but be glad you'll be hitting cones and not guardrails.

Here are a few examples, all from the past year. Don't become another statistic.

I may have missed it, but has anyone even suggested to the person who started this thread to just find an FD and sit in one to see how it fits? There are like two long threads regarding personal height/weight fitament in an FD IIRC. If you're dying to find out how comfortable you might be in an FD, try to search for those two threads.

*edit* nvrmnd, here they are...

I am 17 and recently bought an FD. I had all the abovementioned concerns about handling it and maintaining it. However I can honestly say that I respect/love the car to much to do anything stupid with it. Granted i'm not using it as a daily driver, but if your getting a car to beat on and race your friends all over town (if your street racing your a moron anyway) then go get a civic. Personally i'm a beleiver that if your mature enough and can resist a little peer pressure then you'll do just fine in an FD no matter what age you are.

Oh and the whole reliability thing...I was at KDR a week or so ago. There is an FD there with 200,000+ miles on it. Original engine/turbos/etc... it is deffinitely a tired car, but if you take care of your FD it can run for a very very long time.

Just my two cents.

i'm about 6'1, and i have a 99 spec steering wheel. My thighs hit the wheel, but i think that's because i have stock seats. When i was first driving the car, i felt that the car is too high. Now, I think i'm quite use to it. I almost ate it in my car once (someone talked about the handling limits of the FD) and it's true. If you're not careful. Say good bye to the car you once loved. i was in 3rd going up the on-ramp of a free, (one of those huge circular on ramps) and well, let's say i got lucky and didn't hit anything or any one. I could've sworn i was going to hit a wall or at least drift off into the middle of the free way....
