Should my next mod be V-mount or AI

Hey guys, Im on a budget so unfortunately I can't do both at the moment. My setup is GT35r running 7psi (waiting for injectors) with my IC mounted in position for a vmount conversion (Radiator is in the stock location at the moment). My intake temps are very high at the moment running at on average 113F. I know this based on the PFC.

Here is my setup, I am busy with ducting now but which would you go with first? AI or Vmount to bring AIT down?

113C is pretty high for intake temps.

Depends on what your budget and goals are. If you don't plan on running over 15psi on the GT35r on some 91, then hold off on the AI. The vmount should help your water and intake temps quite a bit. Also, your goals for the car? If you do Auto-X or a lot of road racing, a vmount is beneficial. If you plan on cranking up the boost, the AI is helpful. Both are good modifications...

Are you running a stock radiator? If so, I'd scrap both of those or do a radiator upgrade along with a vmount setup. You figure if you need to pull the radiator, might as well do the vmount if you can afford it. An upgraded radiator is going to make a huge difference, and it's one of the first engine/reliability modifications you should do...

If you plans for doing a v-mount includes a new radiator, I would do the v-mount first.

IMO adding AI is another item that has potential to fail. I don't like relying on that.

Just to make sure, my intake temps are on average 113 deg f not 113 deg c.

My goal is to ultimately run no more then 15psi safely. I plan to do a few track days a year but I want to keep the boost relatively low. We are having pretty high ambient temps in SA summers lately and the track side temps could melt your face right off.

I was all set to go V-mount but after reading Howards case for the rotary, I noticed alot of focus on how AI can keep the internals clean, bring the IAT down and add performance on lower boost settings.

The cost to do either AI or Aftermarket rad and convert it will be about the same in my case.

I appreciate any comments on this.

You can do this and use it with your current IC
http://www.rx7store.net/product_p/vmount%20radiator.htm

and then add AI.

Try make some ducting for ur IC and mount further back away from the fram rail. It's just picking that stinking hot air from ur radiator (which is heating ur IC) not fresh air from the front. Try ducting first coz that made a huge difference for me.

Thanks James, this pic was before I created a heat shield between my rad & IC. I molded a piece of sheet metal and covered it in heat resistant film. It stops the fans from blowing air onto the IC but of course the setup isn't ideal. I then cut the stock intake funnel which runs into the front bumper so that it flows air to the IC but again its far from ideal.

you are correctly focusing on lowering the charge air temps...

tracking the FD is the most challenging thermal activity as the heat cumulates.

if you are running in high ambiant conditions your hurdle is even higher.

i say you need a proper intercooler, a second oil cooler (i like adapting another FD cooler) and at minimum 500 CC/Min of water injection.

if you don't have these items don't track the car. add a set of 10 heat range plugs and 1 oz of 2 cycle poil per gallon in your tank.

you do not need an "uprated" radiator if your OEM radiator is in excellent condition.

ducting to your intercooler (duct must be a minimum of 1/4 the area of your IC less endtank area) is a must.

finally, if you can get outside air into your motor you will drop temps an additional 40 F.

you don't build a bridge w a quarter of the supports missing and expect it to work.... don't go tracking until you get all the pieces together.

good luck,

howard

rx7store vmount runs about 1200 bucks, right? AI runs between 300-450 approx.
Looks like you need the vmount, brother. Your current setup seems a bit shaky. Especially for the track.
AI is cheap insurance for some people and another excuse to turn up the boost for others. But its on my to-do list.

Don't bandaid the issue. You're going to blow that motor if you push the car with intake temps that high. The problem is you are blowing hot air from the radiator through your intercooler. I bet it is heating the air up instead of cooling it. Mount the radiator in a vmount position. You can buy just the V mount radiator like Jason suggested. Add the water injection later once you start pushing more boost.

I also tried to make temporary ducting at first but then bought the pettit duct and i just had to adjust the brackets i made to mount the IC and fitted their duct, I get temps in the 30degC on average warm days. That's what I'd suggest first...working 100% for me

http://www.pettitracing.com/rx7/index_turbo.htm

Email them and ask for the duct only for the coolchargeIII
