shifting w/o a tach

my tach has never worked since i got the car a few months ago. hasn't been a problem since i had a new motor and i wasn't driving the car hard. but now that the motor is broken in i don't know when to shift. so does anyone know approx when to shift gears while driving hard based on mph? thanks.

buy a tach or just listen to the engine.

Personally I always shift with sound. Sometimes I look at tach, but, I don't base the shifting by it. Besides I like to look at "shift up" arrow illumination when I drive.

Of course, that was the primary factor when I cracked 5th gear on my 1000 Katana, too. I was just testing how much it will take and I found out (under warranty at the time so it was replaced at no charge).

In a car like mine you don't hear the beep until you lift the loud pedal.

The engine doesn't get louder on a rotary although the exhaust does. I can't shift by engine noise and you certainly can't wait for the redline beep if your breaking it in. If you don't have a speedo' as well then prolly the cable broke loose from the trans. The owners manual tells you what rpm's you should be in for each gear.

I can do 113 in third =)

that was with 28 inch tall slicks, so the ratio was a little off

Care to elaborate on that? I have had a malfunctioing tach since a couple of days after I got my car back from KDR. I took it out and resoldered the little circle solder joints on the back, according to directions somewhere on this site, and it still doesn't work.

Where exactly can I find this cable, and how to fix?

^ sorry, I don't have instructions. It happened on my Honda so maybe it doesn't work the same. I didn't fix it, so I can't give instructions. When I changed my trans I was told the speedo cable was disconected.

if you need to, buy an auto meter gauge or someother tach.

ya, thought about buying an aftermarket tach and putting it in the stock tach location, but tachs are hella expensive. i'll try fixing it first.
thanks for your help guys.

How about a shift light? Set it up for whatever RPM you want.

Actually, ~$150 is good, seeing as a factory replacement is $450.

And then after that count to 3 mississippi, then shift!
I remember when I was able to hear that sound over my exhaust...memories

No seriously, to be safe don't really keep it in first that long because it flys bye. Safe Mphs would be 30, 65, 100, 135

Get that **** fixed that's really bad bro

The Defi tach is nice and you can add a shift lite to it.

You can try to memorize 15-30mph per gear. ex: 1st min shif is 15mph and max is 30mph, 2nd min=30&max=60...etc
