RX7 intercooler

Hey Guys!

Im looking for a intercooler to replace my OEM one but dont know what to choose since most of the intercoolers are V mounted and pretty expensive. So i wonder if there is any good intercooler on ebay that you would recommand.

My car is all stock no mods have been done.

Start by reading this thread.

This is not a cheap car to own. Generally, most things you're going to want to upgrade are going to cost a pretty penny. Since you're in Sweden too, shipping is going to be a factor as well.

Your power goals are going to determine what type/how big of intercooler you want to run. Most SMICs are almost 4 times the size of the stock one and are good for around 400hp. Then there is the debate, lower AITs, more power. So bigger is better, but not always the case.

I'd start by going through your car and doing the reliability mods before you start upgrading. Since your car is stock, there is much to be done before. You want your car to be running 100% (and healthily) before upgrades so you can isolate if something went wrong, this is why.

^ true dat.

Lots of good resources online OP, i would read and re read.

I picked up my FD in March and still doing reliability mods and it sucks but it will give me a good foundation to build upon.

My best advice is do the reliablity mods and enjoy the car.

Best SMIC for drop in is one of the following:

M2 Medium with duct
Pettit Coolcharge II with duct
PFS Stock mount and Intake combo with duct(My personal favorite since it keeps an intake box).

Dont waste your money on the Greddy or Blitz SMIC. Neither have good ducting and are not an upgrade over stock unless properly ducted.

Judging by where you live(Ive been fortunate enough to visit a couple times), if you dont plan to track the car I would do a front mount intercooler. The knock off greddy FMIC on ebay is a great cheap upgrade. You dont need AC and it really keeps Intake temps down and cleans up the bay a lot. Depending on the FMIC it does take some extra effort to install and you have to decide if you want to relocate the battery or mount it awkwardly in the bay.

Thanks for the answer!

Im looking at PFS IC and looks like people is pretty happy with it. I dont mind going with FMIC but dont know what to go with.

To the others that said that i should buy other parts first, i have already bought the most stuff to make the car more reliability.

Some of the newer SMIC kits like the Pettit Cool Charge Pro III make you relocate the battery. I was never a huge fan of SMIC kits because of its location and because many of them heat soak in traffic. I ended up going with the ETS FMIC kit because it didn't require any custom work or modification. It allowed me to keep the battery in place and seemed to be the easiest to install.

I love the ETS kit, installation was very easy and its a very well built quality piece, I've also had great AIT temps. You also have the option for the 4" core which is huge. It utilizes the stock bumper openings pretty well also. I have had similar and better temps than some of my friends running V-mounts. I would def. look into it as the kit is very affordable you can have it for between $850-$1000 depending on the options.

Are you in this for the long haul or is it just a toy? What are your goals for the car? If you think, based on answering the two questions, that you may want it some day, get the v-mount now instead of another system that you will ultimately replace with a v-mount later. Just one opinion based on personal experience owning since 1993. . .

Pictures of the ETS Kit w/ 4" core. Feel free to pm me about any questions regarding it. I've installed about 4 of them already!
