Replacing front seal ?

I just need some feedback on the difficulties of changing the front oil seal. I'm in the process of a v-mount install so it will be very accessable.

take pulley off, pry out front seal with screw driver and tab the new one in with a hammer, wrench or whatever is laying around.

Hmm, I had a massive "front cover" oilleak in the past an I was told that it would be 12-13 hour job to fix it. I ended up having to get a rebuild motor, for a different reason.

Not quite that easy. The front bolt and hub need to be removed as well. If you're not extremely careful, you risk dropping a thrust bearing out of position.

lilroach - whats the reason behind changing the front oil seal? Is it leaking?

I would guess they wanted to take the front cover off in order to do the job.

Yes, fixing the front cover leak verse the e-shaft oil seal are two different animals. To fix the front cover leak, everything has to come off the front of the engine, oil pain off, and then you can pull the front cover to reseal it. Not a fun task which is why most people just do a rebuild or a reman at that time.

If done carefully, the front cover can be removed and replaced without removing the pan.

IMO, I would never half-**** it. I would just remove the pan like you should. In most cases, it just causes problems later if it's not done right the first time.

I ended up pulling the engine to get that front e-shaft bolt off for my front cover seal replacement. The hard part was diagnosing the problem - I couldnt tell if it was the front cover seal or the front oil seal.

The Good news was that by doing it that way I was able to seal everything back without a single leak. Bad news was I blew my engine a couple months later so I just pulled it back out....
