front main seal replacement

hey guys, well i am looking into buying a car a 93, but it the motor is leaking from the front main seal. the engine has 84k miles on it. i was just wondering does the engine has to be pulled out to replace the seal or can it be done in the car? and if anyone knows where i can find an online guide or something i would really appreciate it. i have looked and looked lol. thanks in advance

It's a tricky job. Depends on if it's the front main seal or the front cover seal as well. Front main seal is just tricky, but could be done in an afternoon with the right tools. Front cover seal, you'll need to pull the motor to do the job right.

Regardless, this would be a strong bargaining point on price - it would likely be a few hundred bucks for a rotary specialist to take care of and do right.

Sure, you just look where the oil leak is coming from (front main seal is around the e-shaft so oil would be leaking from there, the front cover is the front cover of the engine so it would leak around the sides).

Either way, if the engine as 80k+ on it, I would just replace/rebuild motor rather than spend the time and money to repair a fairly costly leak when you might not get much more life out of the motor.

I talked to him in PM's - if the oil is truly coming out around the front pulley, that's a front main seal. Shouldn't be too hard to do with the engine in the car, just have to mind the needle bearing under the front cover.
