Reputable rotary shop will do a better job rebuilding it (assuming they have the experience) than Mazda rebuilds will provide. Although I've heard that the quality of the reman's has been going up lately.

most performance shops wont do the rebuild unless you have some workdone. they will get u a mazda reman though. i have a reman. was very satisified. i was going to get some port work, but was convinced that it was not really needed since my goal is 360 rwhp and was told that can be accomplished easily on the reman. talk to the rotary shop in your area and see what they recomend for you. the dealer was semi knowledgeable but did not do complete work on other things i had asked for. a rotary shop is the way to go. what is that shop in tenesse? try asking them for a local shop they recommend inyour area they may know someone.

Just to clarify the word "new". Getting an engine from Mazda will *NOT* be a new engine. It will be a standard rebuild just like any other shop called a "remanufactured engine" (or reman for short).

Quality is where the difference will be. I've been running on a reman for about 5 years. I've had to reseal the oil pan once in that time. That's the only problem I've had with it. Other people have had more serious problems with remans. However, as with any shop, you will always find a few horror stories from every place.

Getting the reman will be the quickest and will start off beinig the cheapests way to go. Make sure to have your cooling and fuel system checked out while every is apart.

Mahjik, reman?

When you say a reman did you mean a Mazda reman, or a performance shop's version?

Same thing really. Most "performance shops" these days will get a Mazda reman, tear it apart for porting, then put it back together (replacing any parts that need to be replaced).

i hear that rebuilding it costs about a 1000 bucks. and thats with me pulling the engine out and reinstalling it. but is it worth for me to just pay the $2200 and have new rotor housing and such?

If you enjoy working on the car, and are technically proficient, you could possibly rebuild your own. This is assuming you have another car you can drive while your FD is down, and all the special service tools handy (engine hoist, stand, etc.)

OTOTH, my Malloy Reman was shipped to KDR for full port job and reliability mods. Dec 2002 priicng, $1950 for the Malloy Mazda reman, $1300 for the teardown, porting, reliability mods for a total of $3250 on the motor, not including shipping, core, removal, and re-installation.

I just had a brand new engine installed in my FD. Not one used part was used. Luckily I had a warranty on my car or it would of put me in a lot of debt.

I opted to have a brand new engine installed instead of the reman, just for the piece of mind.

What do you mean "brand new"? a new engine imported from Japan? or someone has a few in stock over there?

Tri-Point put one together for me. They ordered all the parts new and assembled it. Looking at my itemized receipt, only one thing was used; engine housing. But that aint a big deal.

Who built it for you? An engine built of entirely new parts would typically be over 6k.....

NEVERMIND....

With all new coolant system hoses, new fluids, new belts, new t-stat, replaced busted solenoid, and oil level sensor, it came out a tad more

More and more remans are being with mostly new parts because of the poor quality of the cores being received. My reman was mostly new save for 1 housing...Malloy Mazda typically has high quality remans because of the volume of reman 13B REWs Malloy Mazda sells.
