Re-center steering wheel ?

Anyone know the easiest way to re-center the steering wheel? My front end is a little screwed up and the only way to get the toe right was to have the steering wheel turned slightly left.

sometimes the mechanic forgets about the steering wheel

had a friend that they couldn't center due to lowering the car and the tie rod end running out of threads (need to have like 1/3 of them left or something). It was only slightly turned.

i would go back and ask.

Yeah, the tie rod ran out of threads. The mechanic knew. I figure I can just rotate one of the mounts leading up to the steering wheel a bit. I am wondering if there is an easy way to do this.

I don't know if this will work with our beloved FD, but, I once had a 69 Camaro that needed the steering wheel centered. A friend of mine did it simply by loosening the "steering box" bolt, which loosened the steering wheel column, then I held the steering wheel in the centered position as he tightened the steering box bolt. Presto. Took most of 5 minutes.

Once again,..I don't know if this procedure will work with the FD. Good Luck.

Fred,

Fix the front-end problem first.

If it's impossible to fix, pull the airbag and move the wheel a spline over.

You shouldn't have a problem aligning your car. My car is really low and the steering wheel is dead center and the guy didn't have any problems doing it. He never mentioned that he ran out of thread either. Go get it realigned.

There is no spline altering occuring. We're talking about repositioning the steering wheel on the splines that come into the driver's area to mount the steering wheel on the upper shaft.

You could pull the wheel off and mount it upside down if you wanted - the rack will have no idea.
