radiater for V-mount

I have been contimplating doing a V-mouont for some time now. It looks like today I will be getting an intercooler core. ( been waiting for a good deal ) Now my question is, are the people who are fabing up there own, using the stock style radiater. When I mention style I am refering to the cut out for the intercooler ducked. From seaching, some one has said the IS300 rad. is better suited for the V-mount setup. Although it seems like alot of people are using stock replacement ones(koyo,fluidyne,pwr.etc.etc.). I would think this is another area you could improve on when going from stock mount to V-mount. Any sugestions on the type of rad. I should use are appreciated. I will try to keep good records of the fab work and many pics threw out the process.

One more Q. wich is the inlet and outlet on the stock rad.(top or bottom)

I am in the process of putting together a "custom" V-mount setup.

No flames please. I am sure if I put a dollar value on my time and labor this is not cost effective.

That said, I have a C&R dual pass radiator (both inlet and outlet on the same side of the radiator) that is just under 28 inches wide and is 19 inches tall. It fits perfectly between the frame rails and when angled down from the cross support in front of the engine extends to just below the lower edge of the front opening of the stock nose. I have removed the AC and PS on this car so no need to leave room for these. I am fabricationg the mounts from aluminum and the amount of ducting on the sides will be minimal since the radiator fills most of the space. I will use two 13" SPAL thinline fans to retain ground clearence.

That is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!

Anyone else use different radiaters.

Also is this a improvment over the stock type? (I think it would)

If any one can find some other threads that I haven't read, please list them.

I was hopeing some more people would have some advice on this.

wich is the inlet and outlet on the stock rad?(top or bottom)

is swilson@assetworks.com the only person using some thing other than stock.

I have been looking into a scirocco radiater, although smaller in H & W the thiknes is 1.5" thick. and it is a duel row so the inlet and outlet are on the pasenger side.

Thats one huge rad. I take it, thats your intercooler your using?

Are you using a true manual rack?

I have been doing some searching and found (did not buy) a radiater from HOWE radiaters. The dim. are 16.250" H by 27.375" W by 3" D part# 34327RNF. It is a double pass, so I will be putting the inlet and outlet on the passenger side. I will also be trying to use the stock fans. It seems there arn't to many after market fans that can flow as much air. Plus they will plug right back in (lengthened wires of course).

They also make one with a oil cooler fitting wich could be used for the automatic trans?

Rather neat Idea but would wonder if this would be bad because maybe the oil would actually heat the coolent?

I will try to take some pics of my stuff this week.

Here are some pics of what I have so far. I still need to remove the power stearing and cooler. The pic of the intercooler, tubing and couplers are what I got for $400. most of the piping is 2.5" but the long straight pipe is only 2.25". I will be cahnging the end tanks to better suit the angle of the mount. The wood will not be staying their.(LOL)

The steering rack is a second gen TII rack with custom mounts.
I want to use the thin 13" SPAL fans to reduce weight and maintain clearance since they are mounted under the radiator. I will not be using the stock fan control logic just a simple thermostat controlled switch and relay. This is not a street driven car. So the fans will run whenever the car is at operating temps. The alternator will need to power the fans and the fuel pumps and perhaps an electric water pump.

The guy that had my car before me did his own custom v-mount. Seems to work really good and he said it didn't cost all that much (compared to some of the kits that are out there). Here's a thread that talks about it. The link to the pic is broken in there but I can try to get one for you if you want.

They don’t cost that much to put together, however the time associated with building it correctly is where it gets you.

If you don’t have the time and really want a professional look, chucks setup is very reasonably prices for what he is offering, and you get all the support and knowledge that comes with purchasing his products.

I made mine because I really enjoy building things and I didn’t care about how much it was going to cost, or how much time it took me.
If you have the time and capability, by all means do it, it was a great experience. But it will take a lot of time and frustration trying to figure out how each little detail needs to fit together before hand, so it doesn’t end up costing twice as much just to get a working finished product.

looks very top quality rotorypower101. Do you have any pics of your raadiater?

I have plenty of time (the car is stored at my work, inside). I always feel like I could make a better product than I could buy, but like you stated some times it would just take to long and to much money to justify.

Keep the pics coming.

Does any one know wich is the inlet on the stock rad (top or bottom)?

It was pretty rough at that point, but after a lot of extra work after that pic and finish gel coating it black, the ducting came out looking a lot better than that.

The only part that really is visible is by the front corners of the intercooler visually, until you crouch down to look into the mouth, so looks is not of the highest concern. It seals the entire setup completely 100% between the V and the airbox and the frame, so that no air is allowed to escape unless forced trough the airbox or cores. With some sanding and a few layers of gel the surface of the ducting looks a lot better now even on the inside. I do hope to eventually build a much more professional CF shroud when I get a little time and more experience in glass molding work.

I don't have any good close ups of the finished product, but you can see it in a couple of the pics, technically speaking its more of a C mount or U mount than a V mount, but hopefully it'll work well, its fully ducted with block offs etc, ill try and get some better pics one of these days soon, we actually kept the AC and power steering cooling, its all flipped to lay flat underneath the radiator, it turned out pretty trick, took a while to figure out just how to make it all work. Obviously, this was done this winter so I haven't taken the car out, but we're hoping for big things, if you click on the pictures in my gallery twice you get a HUGE sized view of the pics...I'm sure our model will be popular as well FYI, the components are an OE replacement fluidyne, turbojeff T51R tray with optima, and a custom 24x18x3 core <if i remember correctly, maybe it was 18x12x3...it's been a while> we built our own end tanks and brackets etc.
