Question regarding the sequential turbos

heyy man i was on the road showing a friend how fast the fd is and suddenly i blew my second turbo(i had bought these used 99spec turbos 2 days ago)...the shaft BROKE! is that common? i went to the guy i bought em from and he gave me a replacement...now the thing is the first turbo of the pair he gave me first had a bit o play in it and 2nd turbo was fine in THIS pair once again the first turbo seems weak n the 2nd turbo is as good as new...i asked him abt it and he says this is how it is in all sequentials...first turbo always has a bit o play...is this true? id really appreciate some good info...thanks guys!

I've never had the problems you're describing, but what I can tell you from experience is that used turbos are a crap chute. I realize you have to pay a lot to import and export anything, but I'd reccomend getting some brand new twins from Japan, or getting some BNR turbos from the US.

These aren't ball bearing turbos, so there should be a little play in the end shaft, but not very much. Unfortunatelt shaft play isn't exactly a science, it's more of a "I think this is about right" or "This is way too loose". If you don't have any experience with turbos, it can be hard to judge.

there should be more play in the front turbo if it was new, but the front turbo gets used more because its always providing boost where as the second turbo comes on after 4500 rpms. Therefore the front turbo wears out quicker just from more use.

but also to add onto that the turbo runs all in one... so if u think one turbo is out just check out the hoses on them.. they might of wore out or something...

Both the primary and secondary are of the exact same construction. If there is more play in the primaries in general it's because the primary tends to do more work.

its a stupid question but how long will these twins last? i mean one turbos fine n the other has a bit o play...im just a bit worried cuz the first pair i got i was boostin i shift to 3rd gear and boost drops instantly to zero...broke the shaft ive never really heard of somethin THAT bad happen to a turbo...i guess im jus bein a bit paranoid cuz o the first pair...but any possible explanation as to how the shaft broke? im thinking maybe something managed to get through the intake?

there's no real set ammount of time that they last. Some people have put 160k on their stock turbos with no issues. My car came with turbos that were so far beyond shot that the compressor wheel was actually gouging the housing, this was with the turbos being replaed twice on a 120k mile car--and I have the reciepts to prove it. I recently replaced them with a set that had 40k miles and they are blowing oil pretty badly, whining and not making more than 2PSI boost.

Like I said, your best bet is really to get something new, the whole thing is a crap chute.

You could take the good turbo from each set and put them together.
